A new Ferron Ranger District Closure Order ( #04 10 26 02 04) for the Black Canyon Fire will take effect on Friday, August 28, 2026. This updated temporary closure—issued for public safety—applies to portions of the Ferron Ranger District and will remain in place through September 28, 2026, unless rescinded. *Please remember that Manti-La Sal National Forest lands not under closure are subject to Stage 1 Fire Restrictions.*

❌What’s Closed:
All Forest Service lands in the Ferron Ranger District located northeast of Reeder Canyon Trail, to the east of Skyline Drive, south of Potters Canyon Road, and west of Millers Flat Road.

❌The following roads and trails are also closed:
• Reeder Ridge Road (FS Road 0054) from the intersection with Reeder Canyon Trail (FS Trail 091) to its eastern terminus.
• FS Road 0038 (Lowry Water).
• FS Roads 2205, 0273, 2467, 2203, 2211, 2212, 2340

The Black Canyon Fire remains 87% contained. Firefighters continue to secure the fire perimeter, patrol containment lines and locate and extinguish remaining heat.

Information gathered from UAS flights yesterday will help crews prioritize areas of remaining heat today. Engines will continue monitoring secured portions of the perimeter.

Chipping operations will continue, along with removal of hose, pumps and other equipment from areas where they are no longer needed.

Nevada Team 3 will transfer command of the Black Canyon Fire to a local Type 3 Incident Management Team this evening. The local team will continue suppression efforts and management of the incident.

As Nevada Team 3 prepares to transition command of the fire, we would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the surrounding communities for the kindness, patience and support shown to firefighters and incident personnel throughout the Black Canyon Fire. Your support has meant so much to us.

Weather: Monsoonal moisture will remain over the area today, bringing another chance of afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms. Storms may produce occasional lightning, brief heavy rain and gusty outflow winds up to 30 mph.

The temporary flight restriction has been lifted. The Black Canyon Fire remains an active fire area, and aircraft may continue to operate over the fire. For the safety of firefighters and aviation personnel, recreational drone operators should avoid interfering with wildfire aircraft, as drone activity can result in the suspension of air operations.

Starting this Friday, August 28, 2026, at 12:01 a.m. Stage 1 Fire Restrictions (Order #04-10-26-00-05) will be in effect for the entire Manti-La Sal National Forest through October 31, 2026, unless rescinded.

What you CAN’T do in Stage 1 Fire Restrictions:
• No open fires at dispersed or undeveloped sites OR outside Forest Service metal fire rings.
• No charcoal/briquette grills in dispersed or undeveloped sites.
• No smoking in an open area that is not barren or uncleared of all flammable material within a 10-foot diameter.
• No torches, welders or grinders used without a pressurized chemical fire extinguisher (8 oz., Class 2A) in areas with flammable material within a 10-foot diameter.

What you CAN do in Stage 1 Fire Restrictions:
• Campfires must be in Forest Service provided metal fire rings at developed campgrounds & picnic areas.
• Gas or liquid-fuel stoves or grills with on/off switch may be used within a 10-foot diameter cleared area.
• Smoking within an enclosed vehicle or building or in an open, developed recreation site.
• Fully enclosed metal stoves with a 5-foot chimney and spark screen may be used within a 10-foot diameter cleared area.
• Torches, welders, and grinders may be used within a 10-foot diameter cleared area. A pressurized chemical fire extinguisher (8 oz., Class 2A) is required.

The Black Canyon Fire has reached 87% containment. Firefighters continue to secure the fire perimeter, patrol containment lines and locate and extinguish remaining heat.

Today, Firefighters will continue to utilize Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS/Drones) to identify heat along uncontained portions of the fire perimeter. Crews then utilize the information gathered from these flights to locate and extinguish hot spots that could threaten containment lines.

Chipping operations continue along portions of the fire. Chipping is a process that breaks down trees, limbs and other vegetation that were cut during suppression activities, reducing available fuels and helping secure containment lines.

Engines continue patrolling secured areas of the fire, while crews are removing hose and other equipment from areas where it is no longer needed.

Weather: Today and tomorrow will continue to bring a chance of showers and thunderstorms, with lightning and gusty winds possible. Thunderstorms may produce brief heavy rain and gusty outflow winds up to 30 mph. Friday is expected to bring warmer, drier and windier conditions, which could increase fire activity where heat remains.

The Black Canyon Fire is now 83% contained. Firefighters continue securing the fire perimeter while addressing remaining heat.

Showers and thunderstorms developed around the fire today but did not move directly over the fire area. Forty-nine lightning strikes were mapped near the fire. Firefighters conducted two aerial lightning reconnaissance flights to look for new smoke and did not identify any new fire starts. Additional reconnaissance is planned tomorrow, and firefighters will continue monitoring for smoke from any lightning-caused ignitions.

Chipping and mastication operations continued in multiple areas of the fire. These activities process vegetation removed during suppression operations, reducing available fuels and helping strengthen and secure containment lines. Wildland fire crews also continued backhauling supplies and equipment that are no longer needed on the fire as work in completed areas winds down.

Weather: Tuesday through Thursday will bring weather similar to yesterday, with a chance of showers and thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds. Friday is expected to be the driest and windiest day of the week, with warmer temperatures and lower relative humidity. These conditions could increase fire activity if any heat remains within the fire.

The Black Canyon Fire remains at 78% contained. Firefighters continue to secure areas along the perimeter and address remaining heat.

Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS/drone) infrared flights identified several hot spots along the western and northern perimeter. Firefighters focused on locating and extinguishing these areas to reduce the potential for fire to spread outside established containment lines.

Wildland fire crews continue chipping vegetation cut and cleared during suppression activities. Chipping removes potential fuels along the fireline, helping reduce the potential for fire spread and strengthen containment lines.

Hunters continue to enter fire closure areas. Closures protect the public and allow firefighters to safely conduct operations. When people enter closed areas, firefighters may have to stop operations to address safety concerns. Please respect all fire closures so crews can continue their work safely and efficiently.

Weather: A chance of thunderstorms remains over the next three days, with lightning and gusty winds possible. By the end of the week, warmer temperatures, lower relative humidity and breezier winds are expected, creating more challenging fire weather conditions.

As Nevada Team 1 wraps up its assignment on the , the team wants to thank the local partners, communities and everyone who supported the response.

Wildfire response is a team effort, and the cooperation and support from the people in and around the fire made a real difference in helping firefighters do their jobs safely and effectively.

At 6 a.m. Sunday, the Black Canyon Fire will transition to Nevada Team 3, who will continue the work alongside local partners and firefighters as the response moves forward.
