Nestled among the rolling hills of Dunkirk, Ward Farm Recreation and Nature Park offers visitors a chance to reconnect with the natural beauty of Southern Maryland.

While the park includes recreational amenities, its true charm lies in the more than 200 acres of forests, meadows, wetlands and open space waiting to be explored.

Explore one of the scenic trails that winds through landscapes shaped by both nature and history. Former farmland is gradually returning to native habitat, creating valuable space for wildlife and pollinators.

Along the trails that were once old farming roads, visitors may spot deer moving quietly through the woods, hawks soaring overhead, or butterflies drifting through sunlit meadows. In spring and summer, the park comes alive with birdsong, blooming wildflowers and the hum of insects among native grasses.

Stroll the stream valleys or watch the lily pads gently bob in the breeze from the fishing pier, a perfect spot for a quiet picnic.

Ward Farm provides an accessible escape into nature just minutes from surrounding neighborhoods. A circuit hike of the natural surface trails is about 3 miles, or you can pick and choose your route for a shorter or longer trek. If you want a more purposeful experience, you can try the disc golf course or the orienteering course tucked along the trails.

Whether hiking the trails, photographing wildlife, birdwatching, or simply enjoying a quiet walk outdoors, visitors can experience the changing rhythms of the natural world close to home. At Ward Farm, every trail offers an invitation to walk on the wild side and discover the beauty of Calvert County’s living landscape.

Information and trail maps can be found at www.calvertcountymd.gov/3047/Ward-Farm-Recreation-Nature-Park.

🌟 Guard of the Month Announcement! 🌟

Each month, Aquatics recognizes one outstanding lifeguard as our “Guard of the Month” in honor of their dedication, hard work and exceptional service. 🎉

As part of this recognition, the selected lifeguard receives our famous “Silly Tube” — a fun and unique flotation device they carry while on duty. 🎨👀 Keep an eye out for its one-of-a-kind appearance in the water as we celebrate the team members who go above and beyond to help keep our community safe.

This month, we are proud to recognize Haylee Plaudis as Guard of the Month! 🏅

Haylee has been an essential part of the Aquatics team since 2017. While lifeguarding is at the core of what she does, she also serves as a pool manager and lifeguard instructor. Outside of work, Haylee is a talented dog trainer and pet sitter and hopes to open her own boarding business in the future.

When she’s not on deck, Haylee enjoys rollerblading, cosplay and attending rave festivals when the weather is nice. Next time you see her, be sure to congratulate her and thank her for the amazing work she does for Aquatics and Calvert County!

Stay tuned for next month’s Guard of the Month announcement! 👏
