As Mental Health Awareness Month comes to a close, Community Resources continues to recognize the importance of mental health and the role it plays in the well-being of individuals, families and communities.

Throughout the month, efforts focused on raising awareness, reducing stigma and encouraging those in need to seek support. Residents are encouraged to continue checking in on themselves and others, learning about available resources and prioritizing mental wellness year-round.

Thank you to the Calvert street outreach teams who made this count possible and who continue to provide resources to our unhoused residents.

For resources or to get involved, please visit the Calvert County Homeless Services Board's resource list at https://calvertcountymd.gov/3679/Calvert-County-Homeless-Service-Boards-R.

On January 28, 2026, the Southern Maryland Point-in-Time Count identified 298 individuals experiencing homelessness across Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary's Counties.

But it's important to remember: the PIT Count is a snapshot of one night—not a count of every person experiencing homelessness in our community.

The count does not include many individuals and families who are doubled up with friends or relatives, moving between households, or otherwise hidden from traditional outreach efforts. It also only includes individuals who were located and agreed to participate on the night of the count.

Every number represents a person, a family, a veteran, a youth, or a neighbor facing housing instability.

Thank you to the volunteers, outreach workers, shelter staff, and community partners who helped make the 2026 PIT Count possible. Together, we continue working toward a Southern Maryland where everyone has access to safe, stable, and permanent housing.

Nonprofit Spotlight: Community Harvest Network

Community partnerships make a real difference, and Community Harvest Network (CHN) continues to play a vital role in addressing food insecurity across Southern Maryland.

CHN helps connect surplus food with local organizations that serve neighbors in need, supporting food distribution efforts that reach families, seniors and individuals throughout the region. Through strong partnerships and a shared commitment to service, this work helps build a stronger, more resilient community.

There are many ways to get involved. CHN offers volunteer opportunities that include assisting at local food pantries, supporting food distribution efforts and participating in community events. One of their signature events, the annual Dragon Boat Festival in North Beach, brings the community together in support of their mission.
