Christmas in April Calvert County

Christmas in April Calvert County Our mission is to preserve and revitalize houses, assuring that low income homeowners live in warmth, safety and independence. We build ramps for the disabled.

Christmas in April*Calvert County, Inc. has repaired at least 25 homes per year since 1991. We work all year to get ready for that special day. Once a home is referred, a home visit is made by the house selection committee. A determination is made whether the house meets the eligibility criteria and can be repaired by Christmas in April. By January the houses are selected, and volunteers are match

ed with work requirements on each house. Our volunteers include licensed carpenters, plumbers, and electricians, but the majority of people, who are not housing experts, work under the supervision of a house captain; as a handyman, painting, cleaning, and/or doing yard work because they want to make a difference. All the work is done to provide a safer home. We replace windows, doors, heating systems, and add insulation. We insulate and replace windows and doors, including storm doors. We rebuild entrances, decks, stairs, bathroom and kitchen floors, replace joists, repair plumbing, repair roofs, and help with the replacement of septic systems. We paint the inside and outside of houses. Because of the extent of work and the funds available, some houses require work over several years.

Friendship Community Baptist Church came to the aid of homeowner who needed a number of repairs to make her home more secure. First, the group replaced a front door that would not properly lock with a brand new one. This wasn’t an easy task as they had to deal with floors that were not adequately supported. They also replaced damaged portions of interior subfloor with new plywood and covered it with beautiful new vinyl flooring. Finally, the group repaired tile in part of the kitchen. The homeowner was extremely pleased with their work!!!

New Life Church volunteers accomplished an amazing amount of work in a short time addressing safety problems in two neighboring houses. They primarily focused on one house--replacing three rotten porch posts, repairing deck joists and a rotting band board, and replacing rotting deck boards. They also replaced a sliding glass door. And if that wasn’t enough, the team went next door and replaced a deck post that had rotted as well as a top plate for a railing. All and all, both homes were much safer and the owners were very pleased with the quality of the work.

The homeowner, who is 100 years old, needed to replace a tub with a walk-in shower. New Life Church volunteers came to her rescue! The old plumbing presented a number of significant challenges which took a lot of time and effort to overcome. The result was a new walk-in shower with grab rails that was infinitely more safe for the homeowner! She and her whole family couldn’t be more grateful to the New Life Church team!

The crew from Huntingtown United Methodist Church quickly took care of this problem. They constructed a small deck with railings, added a set of stairs and removed the strips of wood blocking the door. The owners may now safely leave the back of the house if there were to be an emergency need to do so. Well done Huntingtown United Methodist Church!
