☀️ With warmer temperatures upon us, a friendly reminder to
NEVER leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle, not even for a minute.

Even on mild days, the temperature inside a parked car can rise dangerously fast. Cracking the windows does little to reduce the heat. In just minutes, a vehicle can become deadly.

🚗 Before you lock your car:
• Check the back seat every time
• Keep pets at home when possible
• Place a purse, phone, or work bag in the back seat as a reminder
• Ask childcare providers to call if your child does not arrive as expected

🐾 Maryland law prohibits leaving a cat or dog unattended in a vehicle in a manner that endangers its health or safety.

👶 In Maryland, leaving a child under the age of 8 unattended in a motor vehicle can result in a misdemeanor charge, punishable by a fine of up to $500 and/or up to 30 days in jail.

👀 If you see a child or pet left alone in a vehicle and believe they may be in danger, say something. Call 911 immediately.

🌡️ Look before you lock. A few seconds could save a life.

Maryland’s wildfire season is underway. The Calvert County Department of Public Safety urges residents to be prepared and take proactive steps to reduce fire risk.

Fire safety tips:
• Avoid outdoor burning on dry or windy days; only burn on low-fire danger days
• Properly dispose of ci******es and matches
• Keep yards clear of dry leaves and debris
• Never leave grills or fire pits unattended
• Have an evacuation plan and emergency kit ready

Open air burning is prohibited unless all the following conditions are met:
• A natural or constructed fire break at least 10 feet wide surrounds the burn area and is free of flammable materials
• Adequate personnel and equipment are available to control the fire
• A responsible individual remains on site until the fire is completely extinguished
• A burn permit has been obtained from the Calvert County Health Department's Environmental Health Division

For controlled burns on private property, the permitted timeframe is Sept. 1 to May 31, between 4 p.m. and midnight.

Please note: Many Homeowners Associations (HOAs) prohibit open air burning. Residents should consult their HOA guidelines before burning.

Stay alert and report smoke or fire immediately by calling 911.

To obtain a burn permit, visit the Calvert County Health Department, Environmental Health Division, at www.calverthealth.org/community/environmentalhealthservices/PDF/airpermt.pdf.

If there is a concern or complaint regarding open air burning, contact the Environmental Health Division at 410-535-3922 or submit a report online at www.calverthealth.org/community/environmentalhealthservices/cftemp.htm.

🚜 Help keep our roads safe and clear

As you shovel or plow, please remember not to push or blow snow into the roadway. Snow left in the street can refreeze, create hazardous driving conditions, slow emergency responders and undo the hard work of our crews.

If possible, pile snow to the side of your driveway or yard — not the road.

A big thank you to our road crews working around the clock to keep roads safe and passable, and to residents for doing their part.

For snow updates and safety tips, visit www.calvertcountymd.gov/Snow. Stay safe and warm! ❄️
