Since its founding in 1989, Calvert Advanced Life Support has remained dedicated to providing advanced life support care to the residents and visitors of Calvert County. What began as a small group of committed volunteers operating out of a single room in t
he basement of the courthouse in Prince Frederick has grown into a respected countywide organization with a long tradition of service, professionalism, and community commitment. On July 1, 1989, the organization held its first official meeting under the guidance of Calvert County’s first Medical Director, Dr. Daniel Fricke. During that meeting, the organization elected its first officers and laid the foundation for what would become one of the region’s most respected volunteer paramedic services. On January 1, 1990, Calvert ALS was officially in service and answered its first emergency call using a used advanced life support chase vehicle purchased from the Charles County Mobile Intensive Care Unit program. Operating from modest quarters in the courthouse basement, members worked under challenging conditions with limited space and resources, yet remained committed to delivering the highest level of prehospital emergency medical care to the community. Over the years, Calvert ALS relocated several times as the organization expanded to meet the growing needs of the county. From shared space at Prince Frederick Volunteer Fire Department, to a long-standing home in the basement of a local medical office, and later a larger facility on Theater Drive, each move represented another step forward in the organization’s development and capabilities. As emergency medical services evolved within Calvert County, Calvert ALS expanded its operational footprint by placing advanced life support equipment throughout the county and increasing response capabilities in multiple communities. Today, the organization works alongside county career staff while proudly remaining a 100% volunteer agency — continuing a tradition of volunteer service that has defined the organization since its inception. In 2006, Calvert ALS moved into its current headquarters in Prince Frederick, providing significantly expanded space for operations, training, meetings, and housing of emergency response vehicles. The facility remains the organization’s home today and serves as a hub for volunteer paramedics dedicated to serving the community. Calvert ALS has built a strong reputation for advanced medical training, clinical excellence, and innovation in prehospital care. Members regularly train on the latest emergency medical techniques and utilize advanced equipment and treatment protocols typically found in larger metropolitan systems. The organization has embraced progressive lifesaving initiatives, including a whole blood program that has already helped improve outcomes and save multiple lives in critically injured patients. This commitment to modern medicine and continuous training ensures that the citizens of Calvert County always receive high-quality care when seconds matter most. For decades, Calvert ALS has provided advanced life support coverage throughout Calvert County’s unique geography, spanning more than 200 square miles bordered by the Chesapeake Bay and the Patuxent River. Through dedication, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to public service, the organization continues to answer the call whenever the community needs it most. Today, Calvert ALS remains committed to its mission of providing high-quality emergency medical care while preserving the proud tradition of volunteer EMS throughout Calvert County.
