Republican Women of Calvert County

Republican Women of Calvert County RWCC promotes conservative fiscal policy, small government, lower taxes and racial equality. 2nd Wed. of the month 11:00 @ 424 Solomoms Is Rd., PF. MD

I AM A REPUBLICAN BECAUSE:

I BELIEVE the strength of our nation lies with the individual and that each person's dignity, freedom, ability and responsibility must be honored. I BELIEVE in equal rights, equal justice and equal opportunity for all, regardless of race, creed, s*x, age or disability. I BELIEVE free enterprise and encouraging individual initiative have brought this nation opportunity,

economic growth and prosperity. I BELIEVE government must practice fiscal responsibility and allow individuals to keep more of the money they earn. I BELIEVE the proper role of government is to provide for the people only those critical functions that cannot be performed by individuals or private organizations and that the best government is that which governs least. I BELIEVE the most effective, responsible and responsive government is government closest to the people. I BELIEVE Americans must retain the principles that have made us strong while developing new and innovative ideas to meet the challenges of changing times. I BELIEVE Americans value and should preserve our national strength and pride while working to extend peace, freedom and human rights throughout the world. FINALLY, I believe the Republican Party is the best vehicle for translating these ideals into positive and successful principles of government.

At our July 19th meeting, we had a guest speaker without our usual business discussions. Chris Palombi was our speaker. Chris Palombi is a very talented individual. Chris is a teacher, actor, coach, webmaster, former police officer and has many other talents and accomplishments on his resume. He is running for U.S. Congress as a Representative of Maryland's 5th district. He is currently Webmaster and Girls Varsity Ice Hockey Coach at St. Mary’s Ryken and a member of the school administration.

Chris earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Michigan State. While working as a U.S. Capitol Police Officer, he witnessed the inner workings of how Congress operates. He believes bureaucrats have abused their powers in office. We are losing our liberties and rights more and more. Chris is for eliminating waste, fraud and abuse wherever possible. The constant printing of money hurts all of us. He wants change and empower the people. Chris says there is a great lack of transparency and accountability from members of Congress who are there to serve their citizens.

Chris believes “divisive politics in our nation's capital has led to the lack of preservation of individual rights and freedoms for all citizens, as well as reckless spending of taxpayers' money. For too long the constituents have been ignored and taken for granted and it is time for a change.” Chris is passionate about his bid for Congress and presents young and new ideas for the office.

Our Republican Women’s Club celebrated 64-years at our last meeting. We had 15 members present and several guests.

Our guest speaker on June 21st was Major Steven Jones who is running for the office of County Commissioner. Steve has certainly done so much to prepare for the office of County Commissioner. Steve mentioned some remarkable actions taken to solve problems before they became insurmountable.

I will try to highlight a small portion of Steve Jones’ career spanning over three decades in Calvert County. He is motivated to assist others and see that his home county stays the kind of place where families want to grow and flourish. Starting out as a deputy sheriff was just the first step in a long and storied career that has yet ended and now leads him to pursue further service as a County Commissioner.

Steve Jones served as a supervisor in the Patrol Division and the agency’s Lead Fi****ms Instructor. In 2004 he was appointed as the Sheriff’s Homeland Security Assistant, and became responsible for all counterterrorism response in Calvert County. He was also the Deputy Commander of the Counties quickly growing Special Operations Team. His duties required a high level of skill for time, team and resource management. He was working directly with county agencies but also coordinating with state and federal agencies.

In 2008 Steve was promoted to Lieutenant and placed in command of the Sheriff’s Criminal Investigation Division. His four-year tenure resulted in a 20% decrease in the overall crime rate. Steve has shown just how much responsibility he can manage and how well he can manage it. He took on the position of Multi-Agency Neighborhood Watch Program Facilitator. He clearly demonstrated his ability to be analytical, and purposeful in his actions. Steve has served as a Calvert County United Way Board Member and also appointed to the Calvert County Commissioner Employee Recognition Committee. Steve has served on the Calvert County Commissioner Retirement Board. Steve organized and participated in events supporting The Special Olympics.

As a law enforcement leader in the region, Steve was assigned to attend the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s prestigious National Academy in 2011 and successfully graduated in July of that year. This marks him as one of the top 10% most skilled law enforcement leaders in the country.

In 2014 he was promoted to Captain and made Commander of the Special Operations Team. He has worked with the United States Coast Guard regarding enforcement of Federal exclusionary zone at the Cove Point Liquid Natural Gas terminal and the Calvert Cliff’s Nuclear Power Station. As co-author of a Memorandum of Understanding which was the first of its kind in the nation, helping to ensure the safety and security of the citizens of Calvert County and surrounding jurisdictions both on land and water.

Captain Jones was among a problem-solving group to attack the opioid crisis. The Sheriff’s Outreach for Loved Ones in Distress (S.O.L.I.D.) This program targets families whose loved ones have overdosed. Steve was appointed by the County Commissioners, the Planning Commission that serves as a citizen review board on county planning decisions. In 2019 Steve was promoted to Major and currently serves as third-in-command with the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office. In 2020 Steve was appointed to the Calvert County License Commissioners by Governor Larry Hogan.

Steve’s background and experience brings in his bid to become a County Commissioner, continuing to serve the best interests of the citizens and businesses in Calvert County.

Our guest speaker for the Republican Women of Calvert County club was Pat Nutter. Pat is a member of the Board of Education in Calvert County. Pat took the place of Mr. Bill Phalen when Bill passed away. Mr. Nutter was a former county commissioner for eight years and a police officer in Calvert. Our club members had many questions about things they had heard. Students were slated to go back to school on the 7th and then the 19th, however, the percentage of illnesses have gone up and now the date for their return is unknown.
