Hot and humid conditions, as well as another chance for strong to severe thunderstorms returns for Sunday with a Slight (Level 2 of 5) risk for severe storms. Damaging wind gusts are the primary hazard with any severe thunderstorms on Sunday. Large hail, localized heavy rain, and an isolated tornado also cannot be ruled out.

Happy Saturday! We are looking at a beautiful, mostly sunny, and warm day across the area, with the added bonus of less humidity. High temperatures will climb into the upper 80s to low 90s, dropping the upper 60s to low 70s tonight. Winds will remain light out of the north-northeast. If you are down in portions of Northeast North Carolina, keep an eye on the sky as a scattered afternoon shower or storm is possible.

STRONG THUNDERSTORMS WILL IMPACT SOUTHERN SOMERSET...SOUTHWESTERN
WORCESTER AND ACCOMACK COUNTIES THROUGH 900 PM EDT...

At 820 PM EDT, Doppler radar was tracking a cluster of strong thunderstorms along a line extending from near Tylerton to Tangier to
15 miles northwest of Exmore. Movement was east at 30 mph.

HAZARD...Wind gusts up to 50 mph.

SOURCE...Radar indicated.

IMPACT...Gusty winds could knock down small trees and blow around unsecured objects. Wind impacting handling of high profile vehicles.

Lawsonia around 830 PM EDT.
Onancock, Onley, and Marion Station around 845 PM EDT. Parksley around 850 PM EDT.

* Until 800 PM EDT.

* At 554 PM EDT, a strong thunderstorm was located over Flag Harbor, moving southeast at 15 knots.

HAZARD...Wind gusts 34 knots or greater.

SOURCE...Radar indicated.

IMPACT...Boaters in small craft could be thrown overboard by suddenly higher winds and waves capsizing their vessel.

Hooper Island Light, Smith Island, Crisfield, Deep Hole, Nanticoke River Mouth, Southwest Middle Grounds, Ewell, Tangier Sound, Drum

Frequent lightning is occurring with this storm. If caught on the open water stay below deck if possible, keep away from ungrounded metal objects.

As part of their continuing education requirements, our dispatchers recently visited ECI for a tour of several key departments, including the Medical Unit, Maryland Environmental Service facilities (Power Plant and Wastewater Treatment Plant), and the Dietary Department, where all inmate meals are prepared.

During the visit, dispatchers had the opportunity to meet with nursing staff to discuss Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) protocols, including the questions asked during medical emergencies and the reasons those questions are critical to patient care and responder safety.

Training experiences like these are beneficial, providing dispatchers with greater insight into what to expect when 911 calls originate from within the institution and enhancing their understanding of the operations and personnel they support.

Somerset County is now experiencing Extreme Drought conditions. The burn ban remains in effect until it is formally lifted by the Somerset County Commissioners.

On June 10, 2026, Somerset County Emergency Services, along with local Emergency Operations Center transportation staff, participated in a statewide exercise coordinated by the Maryland Department of Emergency Management. The exercise simulated a large-scale evacuation of the Delmarva Peninsula in advance of a major hurricane impacting the state. The exercise tested Emergency Operations Center transportation & evacuation plans, communication systems, sheltering capabilities, and public messaging. Opportunities like this are critical to maintaining readiness and ensuring Somerset County can respond efficiently and effectively during emergencies. Many of the lessons learned from Hurricane Sandy back in 2012 served as key discussion points among participating agencies and partners. These valuable conversations help strengthen preparedness efforts and improve coordinated response strategies.
