Along the Chesapeake Bay at the Southern end of Maryland's Eastern Shore is Somerset County. Somerset is bounded on three sides by water. It has an area of three hundred thirty-two square land miles and forty-six square water miles, with a population of over 26,000. Its county seat, Princess Anne, is the base of the Department of Emergency Services which operates and maintains 911 and Emergency Ma

nagement, "Somerset Central," serving as the county Public Answering Point. Somerset Central is currently staffed by a total of 18 employees which consists of a Director, an Assistant Director, Emergency Planner, 2 Supervisors, 12 full time dispatchers and 1 part time dispatcher. We answer an average of 50 911 calls per day. We serve 8 fire companies, 2 EMS companies and 3 Police Agencies.

Mostly sunny and seasonably warm today. Highs in the mid 80s to around 90°. Gradually increasing heat and humidity levels return to the forecast tomorrow through the rest of the week. The next chance of rain comes Friday, with a better chance over the upcoming weekend.

Coastal Flood Statements are in effect for the tidal rivers and much of the Eastern Shore. Localized nuisance to low-end minor coastal flooding is expected during the next high tide cycle this evening. If traveling near low-lying flood-prone coastal areas, use caution and never drive through flooded roadways.

Scattered showers today over far southern portions of the area, with cooler, drier conditions expected for the rest of the area today and tomorrow. Be ready, though, as the heat will return for the mid to late week period.

Scattered to widespread showers and thunderstorms are likely today. Localized rainfall totals of 3-5" are possible. There is a potential for localized heavy rainfall which could lead to flash flooding. Additionally, there is a low chance that a storm becomes strong to severe with damaging wind gusts. Showers will linger into Monday for southern portions of the area.

Scattered showers and storms are expected again this afternoon and evening (around 4-11 PM), with the possibility of becoming strong to severe. Damaging wind gusts and localized flooding are the primary threats with any storm.

Isolated to scattered showers and storms are possible today, with the highest chance in the piedmont. An isolated storm could become strong to severe with damaging winds as the primary threat. Temperatures today will be in the lower to mid 90s. Saturday, a higher coverage of showers and storms is likely, with scattered storms in the afternoon and evening. These storms could produce damaging winds and heavy downpours. Sunday will trend drier with "cooler" temperatures.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning from 7/9/2026 7:45 PM to 8:45 PM EDT for Somerset County, MD.

* At 744 PM EDT, severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from near Vienna to north of Deal Island, moving east at30 mph.

HAZARD...60 mph wind gusts.

SOURCE...Radar indicated.

IMPACT...Expect damage to trees and powerlines.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Remain alert for a possible tornado!
Tornadoes can develop quickly from severe thunderstorms. If you spot a tornado go at once into the basement or small central room in a sturdy structure.
