Join the UMES pharmacy students in making the community safer on National Drug Take Back Day! Students will be involved in two events, Drug Take Back Day in Salisbury and Drug Take Back Day in Hurlock.

Why should you properly dispose of unwanted prescriptions?
- Prescription drugs involved in overdoses are almost all originally prescribed by physicians
- In the past 10 years, prescription drug abuse has quadrupled; it now results in more deaths than all illicit street drugs combined
- 2 percent of 12th graders have misused or abused prescription narcotics, five percent tranquilizers, and 10 percent stimulants (e.g. Adderall and Ritalin).
- Improper disposal of prescription drugs can create environmental hazards impacting groundwater, rivers, and harming wildlife.

Do your part and join us on April 28!

National Drug Take Back Day is April 28. UMES Pharmacy students, in conjunction with local partners, are sponsoring two opportunities to dispose of unused or expired prescriptions in a safe, convenient, and responsible way. One is at THE DRUG STORE in Hurlock, MD from 9 am - Noon and the other is in the ED lobby at Peninsula Regional Medical Center from 10 am - 2 pm. Please take this opportunity to dispose of prescription drugs appropriately.

On March 24, the PSGA sponsored the 5th 5K Strides for Epilepsy, held at Salisbury City Park. Under the guidance of adviser, Dr. Jackson-Ayotunde, and with the help of the SOP and the community, over $1,400 was raised for UNA - United Needs & Abilities and CURE: Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy.

Salisbury Mayor Jacob Day was kind enough to join us for the race, where he not only read a proclamation declaring the day Epilepsy Awareness Day, but he also joined in on the race!

On April 18, the PSGA Board had the honor to present Mr. Mike Dyer, UNA CEO, and Mr. David Waters, UNA President, with a check for the proceeds of the race.

The PSGA would like to thank Dr. Jose Balea, of UNA, and Dr. Don Cathcart for their behind the scenes efforts in making the event happen, and all students who volunteered their time to help make this event a success. We look forward to seeing everyone next year!

A huge shout-out to our very own Tola Adebanjo for earning this award from the APhA Foundation. We congratulate her on her achievement and know she will continue to do great things.

Introducing Tola Adebanjo, a 2018 APhA Foundation Student Scholarship Program Recipient!

Tola is the recipient of the Boyle Family Scholarship, established by Cynthia J. Boyle in honor of her family, “My decision to fund the APhA Foundation Scholarship is rooted in my desire to support student pharmacists who will provide much needed patient care in their practices and communities and to acknowledge the vital support of my family.”

Tola is a final-year student pharmacist at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore School of Pharmacy. She served as the UMES APhA-ASP Chapter President and was selected to complete the APhA Experiential Program in Association Management & Leadership. Tola appreciates the impact APhA has had on her professional and personal journey:

“It is an honor to be selected as the recipient of the Boyle Family Scholarship. The thing that motivated me to apply for an APhA Foundation Scholarship was my desire to show gratitude. During my time as a student pharmacist, involvement within APhA has allowed me to develop relationships with a diverse group of students and pharmacists spanning across the nation. While we all have pharmacy as a common thread, each of our journeys to this point has been very different. Applying for this scholarship allowed me the ability to creatively express how APhA has impacted my specific pharmacy journey and the type of legacy I would like to leave as a future pharmacist. By offering this scholarship, The APhA Foundation and the APhA Foundation Donors motivated me to tell my story.”

More about Tola’s involvement and future aspirations can be found here: https://www.aphafoundation.org/Student_Scholarship_2018_Tolani_Adebanjo
