Assistant Chief Shawen, Paramedic Chris Smith, and EMT Ashley Abbott assisted in a pediatric training scenario earlier today at the MSFA convention in Ocean City. AC Shawen is the assigned pediatric champion for Somerset County and serves on the State committee for pediatric training as this representative. We are grateful to have these relationships in place that brings pediatric training to the lower shore for all clinicians.

As EMS week comes to a close, I hope you have enjoyed meeting some of our EMS providers. None of our providers ask for recognition, but each of them deserve it, including our camera shy providers (maybe next year).

With that being said, I am pleased to announce that we had our ambulance inspection conducted by the State of Maryland, MIEMSS. All 4 of our units have successfully passed the ambulance inspection program and have received the Seal of Excellence!!!

For our final introduction for this week, meet part-time EMT-B Ashley Mitchell. Ashley was hired in November 2025.

How long have you been involved in EMS?
I have been in EMS for 2 years.

What made you choose a career in EMS?
After I became a firefighter, I had been praying about what my career in the first responder world should be and God moved me towards EMS and made it all possible!

Why did you choose Somerset EMS as a workplace?
As with anything I prayerfully asked where I should be doing this work and was shown Somerset EMS. This is a great fit for me because our scope of calls is a fantastic learning experience as well as being part of a new and growing system in this county.

Fun fact: I have been an equestrian since I was 12 and I was also an avid hunter.

Our last introduction this evening is full-time Assistant Chief/Paramedic John Brinkley. John was hired by Somerset County EMS in October 2025 and promoted to Assistant Chief in January 2026. He is currently assigned to B-shift. In addition to his regular duties, John is responsible for maintaining the department schedule to ensure adequate coverage is always available.

How long have you been involved in EMS?
I’ve been in EMS for over 40 years beginning as a Volunteer and retired from Baltimore City as a Paramedic in July of 2022

Why did you choose a career in EMS?
I chose a career in EMS because I wanted to help people in their time of need and give them quality care.

Why did you choose Somerset County EMS as a place to continue your career?
I chose Somerset County since it is close to home and wanted to help build a top notch EMS system from its beginning with progressive medicine to the residents and visitors.

Fun fact about me is that I like going camping and I have a twin brother.

Up next on our meet our provider list, we have full-time EMT-B Matt Tomlins. Matt was hired with Somerset County EMS in September 2025. Like other employees that work here, he has served the community for several years in EMS prior to his hiring. He is currently assigned to B-shift.

How long have you been involved in EMS?
Since 1989

Why did you choose a career in EMS?
I believe in community involvement and saw an area where I could provide a needed service to the community.

Why did you choose Somerset County EMS?
I wanted to improve EMS services in the County and was excited to be a part of the implementation and expansion of EMS care to the area.

Fun fact: Matt currently serves as the volunteer Captain for Lower Somerset Ambulance and Rescue Squad. He is taking a step back this year as he starts Paramedic school this fall.

Thank you Matt for not only being apart of this department, but also serving on your days off as a volunteer in Somerset County. Good luck this year as you start your next chapter in EMS!!!
