On March 5th, a call was picked up by Dispatcher Brandon Vila. The caller was an Uber driver who needed help. His passenger got into his vehicle and he noticed something was wrong. They arrived to her destination and she asked him if he could "assist her with committing suicide." The driver immediately called 911 and was answered by Vila.

According to the driver, Vila on the phone "was very calm, professional, and efficient... His handling of this was above and beyond and deserves to be commended for his efforts."

Vila dispatched officers and they were able to calm down the female subject and get her the help she needed.

Thank you Dispatcher Vila!

Dispatcher Kelly helps police find lost juvenile in the woods who needed medical attention:

On March 6th, Dispatcher Brian Kelly took a call from a 17 year old female who was lost in the woods and having an asthma attack. She was unfamiliar with the area, couldn't provide an address or location and was having severe shortness of breath, where she could barely talk during the call.

Dispatcher Kelly was able to obtain the GPS coordinates of the call and quickly dispatch officers to the location of the teenager. Officers responded quickly and arrived within 2 minutes. The juvenile caller was transported to the hospital.

Thank you to our IXP Dispatcher Brian Kelly!

Being a Public Safety Dispatcher or Telecommunicator means you are attentive, calm and efficient in high stress situations while on-duty. Telecommunicator Julianna Williams showcased that the skills dispatchers and telecommunicators learn in their extensive job training carry into their everyday lives.

Last month, Telecommunicator Julianna Williams from our MBTA site in Boston, MA, was off-duty riding an MBTA train line. She noticed a passenger pacing aimlessly who had walked up to another fellow passenger. Williams witnessed the unprovoked subject strike the fellow passenger repeatedly with a large rock.

Even though the suspect was still armed, and Williams was unfortunately still in harms way, she knew the next steps to take. She immediately contacted Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority Police and gave them a detailed account of the attack and the description of the suspect. Additionally, Williams provided information regarding the victim's injuries so medical personnel could be notified.

The train was held in place until officers arrived on scene, the suspect was apprehended and the victim obtained necessary medical attention.

During Public Safety Dispatch Appreciation Week let’s all thank those who ensure Help Is On The Way when we need it most.

Did you know: Most 911 callers are calling emergency services for the first time.

If you have also never called 911 before, here are 3 tips to help you and the dispatcher get the help you need ASAP.

1. Stay calm and don't hang up.

The dispatcher on the other end is only trying to help you, and to do so, remaining calm is very important. The dispatcher needs all the information to provide the help you need and they will tell you when it's okay to disconnect.

2. Listen to the dispatcher and answer every question.

The dispatcher will ask you questions and every answer is important to the goal of getting you the help.

3. Know your location and be prepared to provide it immediately.

Knowing your exact location or working with the dispatcher to find out where you are can get you emergency services even quicker. This can be detrimental, especially when minutes matter.

To all public safety dispatchers/telecommunicators: what are other tips for people calling 911 for the first time?

Fast-Acting Lawrence Site Dispatchers Aided in Arrest of Wanted Man:

IXP Lawrence, NJ dispatchers, Gabriella Amiet, Lilkha Emile and Paul Palombi, assisted on several calls of a man causing several disturbances in the area. He was said to be screaming in the roadway, trying to force his way into an occupied vehicle, jumping on top of cars, screaming at motorists, and broke into a residences' home, inciting an active home invasion.

Our dispatchers were able to quickly piece together all the calls and incidences to the male subject, and dispatched units immediately. He was promptly located and arrested.

In addition to the arrest and charges of criminal trespass, burglary and several narcotic offenses, the male was wanted for violation of probation and an underlying charge of Bank Robbery.

Thank you Gabriella, Lilkha and Paul!

Last month on February 15th, an influx of high-intensity calls came through for the day shift at our Danbury, CT IXP site. The calls included a dangerous domestic disturbance, a fatal motor vehicle accident, a baby having trouble breathing, an untimely death, and a deployed SWAT team call.

Supervisor Dan Santos applauded the team, "I just wanted to take this opportunity to recognize Squad 1 for a job well done. These were tough calls, and we all did a great job. Everyone was doing their part in keeping the flow of information running smoothly through the center and out to the units. The teamwork on this squad was in full display today. Again, great job and thank you for all your hard work!"

Thank you, Danbury!
