Committee to Re-Elect Matt Eggers

Committee to Re-Elect Matt Eggers On this page, you will get updates as to why you should re-elect me as County Clerk & Recorder.

11/09/2022

Thank you, Bureau County, for re-electing me as
your Clerk & Recorder. I am thankful to have
another 4 years in office. Thank you to all those who supported me during this campaign, whether it was through a sign in your yard, an encouraging word spoken, or help walking parades. It's been a difficult campaign for my family and me, but God has been good through it all. We praise Him.

I just want to say thank you to everyone that has supported my re-election campaign for Bureau County Clerk and Recorder. Please remember to get out and vote tomorrow if you have not done so already. Thank you!

No matter how you cast your vote from now up until or on Election Day, you can feel confident that your vote will be correctly recorded. Illinois is one of only six states that require voting machines to have a permanent paper record, even if it's a touchscreen.

If there's an office or issue on the ballot you don't want to vote, you can leave it blank, and the rest of your ballot will still be counted!

Network Security in the County Clerk’s Office...

I am thankful for our local IT Vendor and his expertise in providing safe, secure computer networking and backups. My opponent brought up that in his previous job at Heartland Bank that they would get regular security training through their email. While, we don’t currently do this, we do have the ability to. However, after talking with our IT vendor, he assured me our firewall is so sensitive, that nothing of an insecure nature will get through it. Plus, he added that the firewall is monitored daily and that he checks any issues that the firewall catches. Also, my office computer is on a separate network than the rest of the office/Courthouse in order to provide an extra layer of protection. I regularly meet with our IT vendor, as well as the State Board of Elections IT person, to discuss how we can continue to further protect the office from any hackers. Our IT vendor is local and provides service to many businesses in the area, including banks and schools. The software he provides is top of the line. Network security in my office, and the Courthouse overall, has always been up-to-date, top of the line, a top priority, and is in good hands with the knowledge of our IT Vendor.

The security of vital/land records is another topic brought up by my opponent. However, there is no problem within my office regarding the security of records recorded. Anyone who comes into the
Recorder’s Office to purchase a certified copy of a birth/marriage/death certificate must show ID, be 18, be on the vital record, or be a parent of someone on the record. If someone requests a land record, they must have personal or property right interest in the record. If you call the office or mail in a request to
have a vital record mailed to you, we still require a copy of your ID to process the request. Same goes for ordering a vital record online from our office through Official Records Online. After going through a rigorous questionnaire, the person requesting the record is still required to upload a copy of their ID to purchase that vital record. So, no matter what method someone takes to purchase a vital record, they must supply an approved form of identification. Your vital records can be requested online, but for security purposes and your protection, the actual record is not able to be accessed online. That would be asking for trouble. It is also important to note that vital records are recorded in the county in which the event takes place, so my office may not have your particular record. For example, if you live in Spring Valley and have a child born at IVCH, you will have to receive that child’s birth certificate from LaSalle County. Proper recording and access to important documents in my office is something I take seriously.

Let’s talk about security a little bit. My opponent keeps using that word, whether it is in regards to elections, records, or when it comes to the office itself. Over the next few days, I will make a post about measures that are already in place to address these concerns. The security in the County Clerk & Recorder’s Office in these areas has not been a problem, and I continue to stay up-to-date and educated to take the best security measures for you and my office.

Election security is a very big issue in the nation these days. In Bureau County, we have not experienced election fraud or security threats. All voting machines, tabulators, and touch screens are rigorously tested for each election by our trusted election vendor. Our voting machines are not connected to any internet source. No voting equipment at the polling locations has an internet connection. Even the laptops used at early voting sites are not connected to the internet. By Illinois statute, it is illegal to ask for ID at the polls, so election judges are trained to verify and match signatures. Voters coming into the polls sign their pre-printed ballot app, and if their signature is not exactly the same, or closely resembling the signature we have on file, election judges are trained to either have the person try and sign again, or to re-register them there at the poll. At the end of the night after everything is packed away and brought back to the Courthouse, results are uploaded from the machines by myself and my election vendor. There are trained staff and volunteers working on election night and not just one person is left alone to oversee a task. I also have a ballot drop box in the back of the Courthouse that is within the range of the Courthouse security cameras. These cameras are monitored daily by courthouse security and the box is checked at least once per day by myself for any ballots inside as well as any potential tampering. The box itself is secured to a cement slab in the ground. Election security in Bureau County has not been an issue, and remains one of my top priorities as County Clerk. Please share this post and help get the word out.

Please feel free to call the office at 815-875-2014 if you would like to talk about any of our security procedures we already have in place.

***Correction Post***

I misspoke on my post regarding the public forum that was held at the Prouty Building. The current 815 Media owner is in Oglesby, IL.
In my original post, I stated, “There were tech issues beyond my control and the ones who could fix it were in Florida and they were dealing with Hurricane Ian.” What I meant to say is that my current vendor, 815 Media, out of Oglesby, IL and myself were contacting the previous owner of 815 Media(who now lives in Florida) to see if he could help with the current problem that caused the website to be down.

Today is the last day to register in person at the County Clerk’s Office and still go and vote at your polling place on Election Day. Tomorrow starts grace period voting. Anyone that is not registered to vote, but comes into the office to register will have to vote at that same time. If you would rather wait, you will still be able to go to your polling place on Election Day and register to vote and vote at the polling place on Election Day.

It's Local Election Authority Tuesday! Please note today is the last day for regular registration prior to the November 8 General Election! Online registration will remain open until October 23 and Grace Period registration begins tomorrow!
