***Mill Creek Area Update***

Crook County Fire & Rescue is actively monitoring the fire activity in the Ochoco National Forest and its potential impact to the Mill Creek area. CCFR fire crews are integrated with the Incident Management Team overseeing the Brewer and Green Mountain fires. CCFR has crews in the Mill Creek area currently monitoring the situation, and has an operational plan in place if a swelling of resources from CCFR are needed in the area.

Did you know Crook County Fire & Rescue is home to the oldest fire department in Central Oregon? Even more remarkable, we still own the very first piece of firefighting apparatus purchased by the department.
In 1882, Prineville purchased this six-man Rumsey hand pumper for just $180. Manufactured by Rumsey & Co. of Seneca Falls, New York, it traveled by ship around Cape Horn to Portland before being transported to The Dalles and hauled by horse-drawn freight wagon to Prineville.
Before fire engines had motors, six firefighters worked the long pump handles by hand to supply water to the fire. A hand pumper of this size likely produced around 40–70 gallons per minute. By comparison, our modern fire engines are equipped with 1,500 GPM pumps—more than 20 times the pumping capacity of this historic engine, all operated by a single firefighter.
More than 140 years later, this remarkable piece of Prineville's history is still proudly cared for by Crook County Fire & Rescue. It rolled through the Crooked River Roundup Parade last weekend and will be back on the streets for the Prineville Fourth of July Parade.

Today we are honoring Mike Wright's 50 years of service. To honor him, we will be sounding the Fire Siren at 2pm. Many years ago, this siren rang at noon everyday and to alert responders when there was an emergency. This is part of the ceremony, please do not call 911.

Crook County Fire & Rescue will be honoring Mike Wright's 50 years of service on May 19th, 2026 at 2pm at the Fire District’s Annex building located at 205 NE 4th St. in Prineville. Light refreshments will be provided.
