Here are a few other surprising facts about the profession:
They take down gangsters: Infamous mobster Al Capone was brought to justice not by FBI raids, but by a team of forensic accountants who proved his lavish spending vastly exceeded his reported income.
They run the Oscars: Since 1935, PricewaterhouseCoopers has used a dedicated team of CPAs to hand-count the Academy Awards ballots. The secretive process takes up to 1,700 hours.
They invent candy: Bubble gum was invented by an accountant named Walter Diemer in 1928. He also established the color of the original Dubble Bubble as pink because it was the only food dye he had on hand.
They love rock and roll: Classic rock legends Mick Jagger (The Rolling Stones) and Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin) both studied accounting in their youth.
A famous linguistic quirk: The word "bookkeeping" is the only word in the English language with three consecutive sets of double letters.
