Special thanks to Justin Willis and the JCPS Clothing Assistance Program for hosting 21 staff Knights today! It was fun to volunteer our time helping unload multiple pallets of shoes. We appreciate the support CAP offers the students of JCPS, and enjoy taking time to give back.

Our staff has had a great week! We have had productive work sessions focused on K-5 vertical alignment, welcomed our newest Knights, we celebrated our 5 retirees, had a cookout hosted by our admin team, and participated in a mini flash mob for Dr. Terry. We wish our Knights a wonderful summer! See you in the fall!

Welcome to summer, families! We have loved the 25-26 school year, and are already making plans for next year! In the meantime keep the learning going with our previously shared summer choice board. You may still access IXL and don’t forget to use the Louisville Free Public Library. Be safe and have a wonderful summer! We will miss our students and families!

It was a musical extravaganza yesterday at our spring concert! Our talented students did an amazing job. Kudos to our teachers Mr. Barnfield, Mrs. Hodges, and Mr. McLaughlin for their leadership of band, WindStars, orchestra and choir.

It may be the end of the year, but our students are still working hard. On a pass through the building Thursday, we saw a classroom celebration of learning, student created game boards from reading passages about music genres, readers’ theater, a summer camp math escape room, a book tasting, measuring practice, writing conferences for persuasive essays on water supply protection, and a compound word review. Friday is Field Day, and we will learn about teamwork, cooperation, and being good sports! The learning at NCES continues until the last bell rings. 😎

The final Acts of Valor ceremony of the school year was held last week! Our students were recognized for demonstrating the character trait of courage through their actions and choices. To celebrate, our Special Area Teachers participated in a fun and friendly basketball competition for this month’s teacher challenge. It was a great way to end the year with school spirit, teamwork, and excitement!

Ever wonder what teachers do in the summer? They recharge, sometimes pick up extra jobs, and prepare professionally! Each summer we engage in a staff book study. We read the book independently and meet to discuss our best take-aways as educators. We have read The Knowledge Gap and Co-Teaching That Works in recent years, and this year our choice is 10 to 25: The Science of Motivating Young People. Each summer about 30 staff members opt in for this professional learning experience. We are committed to ensuring equity and inclusion for the beautiful students we receive each school year. Bonus: Our book choice this year is a powerful read for parents and mentors of young people.

Our first graders had an amazing Showcase of Learning last week. They shared their new knowledge of birds with family members and staff visitors. They also shared opinion writing on cats vs dogs. We are proud of our students’ work, and we love that they can share it with an authentic audience! Great work, 1st grade!
