Rhode Island Wastewater Operator Certification

Rhode Island Wastewater Operator Certification RI Board of Certification of Operators of Wastewater Treatment Facilities

Wastewater treatment facility operator certification insures that only qualified individuals will operate the state's municipal and industrial wastewater treatment facilities. In total these facilities treat over 100 million gallons of municipal and industrial sewage each day before discharging the purified water back to the state's rivers and bays. The licensing process is directed by the seven-m

ember Board of Certification of Operators of Wastewater Treatment Facilities, which was established by Rhode Island General Law § 42-17.4 by the General Assembly in 1979. Board members act on behalf of their respective appointing organization to provide guidance and expertise. Regular monthly meetings are generally held the first Wednesday of the month at 9:30 AM at the offices of the Department of Environmental Management. The meetings focus on current Board business, such as the disposition of applications by individuals applying for wastewater operator licensure in Rhode Island. Matters before the Board may also include revisions to regulations, requirements for certification to be imposed on individuals or municipalities, and other advisory opinions.

Check out Alex Kuffner's great story on the successes of the wastewater community in keeping our waters clean and addressing climate change.

The defining feature of a sign mounted more than six feet off the ground at the entrance to the Warwick Sewer Authority is a thick black line bordered in red. “HIGH WATER MARK,” the sign reads, above the date March 31, 2010. “DURING THE GREAT FLOOD OF 2010, WATER FROM THE PAWTUXET RIVER ROSE T...

DEM highlights the wastewater profession once again!

Recently, DEM and the New England Interstate Water Pollution Control Commission (NEIWPCC) held training to help operators and managers of the critical wastewater sector prepare for extreme weather. The course is part of DEM’s efforts to assist communities in preparing for flooding and severe weather. Work like this has been identified as a priority in the statewide Resilient Rhody plan.

During the great flood of 2010, many homes and businesses were damaged or destroyed in Rhode Island. The Warwick Wastewater Treatment Facility’s “Natick 2” pumping station was not spared flooding, which needed to be rebuilt and raised to handle future extreme flooding events.

Our state's future will be shaped by the infrastructure choices we make today. DEM conducted a study to assess the vulnerability of RI's wastewater collection and treatment facilities to climate change. RI's 19 major wastewater treatment facilities collect and treat close to 120 million gallons of wastewater every day. Preparing for projected increases in storm intensities, rainfall amounts, and rising seas helps state agencies and communities consider how best to protect this critical and expensive infrastructure in current and future conditions.

We are proud to support the men and women who operate, maintain, and manage Rhode Island’s wastewater treatment facilities and the vital role that they play in keeping our water clean and our communities healthy.

Communities will soon be able to apply for financial assistance with wastewater resiliency projects thanks to the support of statewide voters who approved last November’s Green Economy & Clean Water Bond, which included $5 million to help prepare the wastewater sector for more severe storms and sea-level rise.

Happy !

Around the world today, folks are celebrating the important tool known as Geographic Information Systems, or GIS for short. Engineers, planners, regulators, operators, and especially our wastewater collection professionals routinely use GIS to more precisely map and plan a better world.

Thanks to all the out there!

GIS Day provides an international forum for users of geographic information systems (GIS) technology to demonstrate real-world applications that are making a difference in our society.

More and more, "flushable" wipes that aren't are in the news.

What's your nightmare story about wipes? Share them here or send them to Bill at DEM. We want to get the word out to RI about not flushing wipes!

Unbelievable images on Monday showed a massive backup at a Lowcountry sewer plant from a clog of baby wipes and flushable wipes. On Tuesday, the Plum Island Wastewater Treatment Plant on James Island was back to normal. Mike Saia, communication manager with Charleston Water System, said the departme...
