This budget includes $115 million in funding increases for Medicaid services which includes investments in disability services.

This is what happens when the disability community comes together!

Thank you to our lawmakers for showing that we are a state where everyone can thrive. 💚

2026 Legislative Session: Recap & Gratitude

Session is over. Here’s where we landed for Disability access in Rhode Island:

4 bills introduced. 50% passing ratio. The work continues.

The hard one:
Our housing bill didn’t pass either chamber. I believe people are still afraid to take the step up and make real accessibility a reality. But fear won’t stop us. We’ll fight hard and come back stronger next year. Access is non-negotiable.

The ones that moved, but need one more push:
Our language change from “handicap” to “accessible” + the Parking Mobility app passed the House unanimously. We had a great hearing and we know we had the support in the Senate… it just never made it to the Senate floor. Next year, we get it over the line. Words matter. Data matters. Access matters.

The wins we’re celebrating:
Accessible Plates: All vehicles with adaptive equipment will now get an accessible plate at registration. This is a game changer. It won’t replace the blue placard, but for so many of us who use power wheelchairs, this is the only vehicle we can travel in. We can’t use other people’s cars. Now our main vehicle will finally reflect that.

RAMP Charity Plate: A charity plate to raise money for RAMP and raise awareness for accessibility. Allies and the entire Disability community can purchase it, and a portion of the proceeds will support RAMP’s work. Visibility + funding = progress.

Thank you:
To every Representative and Senator who prioritized accessibility this session — your commitment to the Disability community is second to none:
A special shout out to
Senator Lori Urso - District 8, State Senator Sam Bell, State Senator Leonidas Lou Raptakis, Senator Andrew R. Dimitri, District 25, Johnston Lou DiPalma Jennifer Stewart For State Representative District 59 State Rep Evan Shanley, Representative Richard Fascia, State Representative Earl Read

Special shoutout to Representative Grace Diaz for submitting the resolution to proclaim July as Disability Awareness & Disability Pride Month.

And thank you to the full Rhode Island House of Representatives Rhode Island Senate for passing these bills. We look forward to working with all of you next year.

We didn’t get everything. But we moved the needle. And we’re not done.
