About the Mashapaug Nahaganset Chippissuog of the Nanhigganêuck Sontim∞nk - "Neechanog toh Kawtawntawitt"
Acknowledged as early as 1638 as a principal village of the Nanhigganêuck Sachemdom and as a boundary of the English settlement of Providence, the Mashapaug Nahaganset Chippissuog was reconstituted on December 15th, 2009, and reconstitutionalized as a soverign insular area political organization on July 28. 2022, in the ancestral Nanhigganêuck territories contemporarily referred to as Providence, Rhode Island. The traditional Nanhigganêuck territories of the Mashapaug Nahaganset Chippissuog include Assapumsik, Chaubatick, Mashapaug, Masswascutt, Meshanticut, Neutoconkanut, Pomemganset, Setamachut, Shawomet, Wanskuck, Weybossett, and Woonasquatucket. The traditional Nanhigganêuck territories of the Mashapaug Nahaganset Chippissuog are bounded to the south by Pettasquamset, to the north and northwest by the traditional Nipmuc territories, and to the east by the traditional Pokanoket territories. Chippissuog Enin status in the Mashapaug Nahaganset Chippissuog is open to any individual who can substantiate a consanguineous relationship to an acknowledged Nanhigganêuck Sachem or to an individual identified as "Narragansett" in: a) the June 1763 Petition of Indians against sale of land by Thomas Ninigret; b) the August 1763 List of Indians who accepted offer of the Sachem; c) the October 1769 Petition with agreement of part of Indian tribe against sale of land; d) the August 1773 Petition of Narragansett Indians for survey of lands and prohibition against sale of land; e) the October 1812 Indian Petition against sale of land; f) the January 1813 Indian Petition against sale of any more land; g) the May 1815 Petition by Narragansett Indians to have Rhode Island citizens removed from their land; h) the October 1823 Petition by the Narragansett Indian tribe; i) the 1870 Petition by Narragansett Indians for Rights; j) the 1881 Report of Commission on the Affairs of the Narragansett Indians to the Rhode Island General Assembly; k) the 1989 Narraganset Indian Tribe rolls; l) the "Narragansett Dawn" publication; m) the October 2008 article “Memorializing the Narragansett: Placemaking and Memory Keeping in the Aftermath of Detribalization”; n) the City of Providence's 2021 "A Matter of Truth" report; o) the official allotment maps for the Indian Reservation West Side, Indian Reservation East Side, Indian Lands at Fort Neck, Indian Reservation Cedar Swamp, or Indian Lands at Fort Neck; p) the official or historic records of the Colony of Rhode Island; q) the official or historic records of the State of Rhode Island; r) or other records or evidence substantiating lineage as a "Narragansett". The Mashapaug Nahaganset Chippissuog is a chartering Nation of the Federation of Aboriginal Nations of the Americas (www.FANA.global).
