Rhode Island Civil Rights Roundtable

Rhode Island Civil Rights Roundtable On January 19, 1998, in honor of the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a group of RI based organizations issued a call and a challenge.

They challenged the RI Civil Rights Community to work together across boundaries to make a positive change. They formed the Rhode Island Civil Rights Roundtable and, since that time, have been calling upon all organizations in Rhode Island who are interested in Civil Rights issues of any kind to join them.

2021: COVID affected much including the Roundtable, which no longer meets. In future year

s we hope to re-start the initiative. Till then, much gratitude to community advocates who work daily to make Rhode Island a better, fairer, more just state.

In past years:
The Roundtable is a consortium of over 40 community organizations and advocates committed to advancing the civil rights of all Rhode Islanders through community dialogue, legislative advocacy, educational forums and the like. Purpose of the Roundtable:
• To develop trust and collaboration among the agencies and individuals who work on civil rights issues in Rhode Island.
• To form and maintain a communications network.
• To formulate a consensus agenda of common public policy or legal issues to work on together.
• To work across boundaries to make positive change. Principles:
• Any group interested in Civil Rights may be a participant in the Roundtable.
• The Roundtable will take positions on matters of public policy and legislation. All members are not required to agree with every position.
• Meetings are open and groups or individuals who do not wish to be listed as members may still attend meetings.
• We all represent under served constituencies so we must stand together. Original co-founding groups of the Roundtable were the NAACP-RI and NCCJ-RI (now named Rhode Island for Community & Justice). RICJ continues to administratively organize and support the Roundtable.

Time to fight... ask your Senators to defeat the "kill the nonprofits" bill.

Time to fight... ask your Senators to defeat the "kill the nonprofits" bill.

Sadly, the House just passed 9495.

This bill, IF IT PASSES THE SENATE, could drastically affect how nonprofits operate. It would allow the federal government to terminate the tax-exempt status of nonprofits without due process.

Thank you for all of your efforts to try to stop this bill, through signing the petition and calling legislators.

We can't stop! We must urge the Senate to vote NO, and we'll keep you informed about next steps. Stay tuned!
