The John Carter Brown Library (referred to locally as the JCB) is an independently funded and administered institution for advanced research in history and the humanities founded in 1846 and located at Brown University since 1901. The JCB houses one of the world’s outstanding collections of primary materials related to the history of the Americas during the early modern period—including books, maps, manuscripts, and other materials.

The John Carter Brown Library invites educators to a workshop titled “Religious Pluralism and Democracy” THIS THURSDAY, June 4, 2026 from 3:00-5:00pm.

Intended for junior high and high school educators, this workshop will feature two learning sessions on histories of religious freedom in colonial and Revolutionary America/New England from Dr. Sara Georgini, series editor for the Papers of John Adams, and Dr. Katharine Gerbner, Associate Professor of History and Director of Religious Studies at the University of Minnesota.

The workshop will take place at Andrews House on the campus of Brown University.

Save the date!

On the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the John Carter Brown Library and the John C. Danforth Center for Religion and Politics at Washington University will host a major conference in Providence, Rhode Island, June 4-6, 2026, on the broad topic of religions and freedom c. 1776.

On Thursday, June 4 at 5:30 p.m., the JCB will host the keynote, “Histories of Religious Freedom: A Conversation with Benjamin Park, President of the Mormon History Association.”

A reception and exhibit viewing will follow.
