Bob Wells is our blacksmith at the Ranlett Tool Museum, part of the Swift-Daley Complex on Rt 6 (next to the Eastham post office). He and his apprentice, Andrew Shearer, have been working to establish the smith shop. Thanks to Parker Mumford at the Provincetown Independent for the story and Agata Storer for the beautiful photos, including this one. You can read more online.

BREAKING: WTF! Navy weighs stripping Black Pearl Harbor hero's name off an aircraft carrier — to potentially rename it after Trump instead.

The U.S. Navy is reportedly working to strip the name of Doris "Dorie" Miller, a Black Pearl Harbor hero, off a $13-billion aircraft carrier — with internal discussions actively floating the idea of replacing it with Donald Trump's name instead.

Of course, they are.

Miller enlisted in the Navy at a time when mess attendant was one of the only positions open to Black sailors. When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, he tended to his wounded commanding officer, then took control of an anti-aircraft gun he had zero training on and opened fire on enemy aircraft, helping fellow sailors reach safety before the ship sank beneath him. He earned the Navy Cross, became the first African American allowed on a national War Bond speaking tour, and was later killed in action in 1943. The USS Doris Miller was announced in 2020 as the first aircraft carrier ever named for an enlisted sailor and the first named for a Black American.

Now, internal Navy documents have quietly stopped calling it the "USS Doris Miller" altogether, referring to it only by hull number, CVN-81 — the same designation used in Trump's own executive order on shipbuilding. Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao is reportedly reviewing whether ships can be renamed after sitting presidents, which would be historically unprecedented. Meanwhile, the Navy claims it might name a DIFFERENT ship after Miller and recommend him for the Medal of Honor — final approval pending from Trump himself. Miller's own family, according to his great-nephew, wasn't even notified of the proposed change.

This fits a documented pattern under Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who has aggressively targeted names associated with diversity and inclusion — reverting Confederate-honoring Army base names back to their originals through technicalities, and forcibly renaming the USNS Harvey Milk, honoring the gay rights icon and Navy veteran.

And all of this comes as the same Pentagon dismisses genuine suffering among actual living sailors. Families aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln have reported inadequate food, broken toilets, and crushing exhaustion after nine months at sea amid Trump's Iran war. Trump's response? The deployment hadn't gone on "nearly long enough." Hegseth called the reports "completely misrepresented."

So, let's be clear about the priorities here: real living sailors' suffering gets dismissed, while a dead Black war hero's legacy gets quietly erased to make room for Trump's ego. That's not honoring the military. That's using it as a personal monument — and it’s disgraceful.
