đźš’ Celebrating 50 Years of Service đźš’

At the June 8th Board Meeting, the Pueblo West Metropolitan District Board of Directors proudly recognized the Fire Dept. Formation Resolution honoring the Pueblo West Fire Department as it celebrates 50 years of dedicated service to our community.

Originally established as a volunteer fire department on June 2, 1976, the department has grown alongside Pueblo West—driven by the commitment of both early volunteers and today’s highly trained career firefighters. Over the past five decades, they have provided critical fire protection and emergency medical services, ensuring the safety and well-being of our residents.

We appreciate all our dedicated first responders and are proud that they serve our community. Please join us in thanking the Pueblo West Fire Department for their continued leadership, service, and sacrifice.

👏 Congratulations on 50 years—and here’s to many more!

Myth vs. Fact: Fire Protection Sales Tax

❎MYTH: Fire Protection Sales Tax funds can be moved into the General Fund or used “behind the scenes.”
âś…FACT: Fire Protection Sales Tax funds are maintained in a separate fund and cannot be transferred to other funds.

What this means:
These funds are accounted for separately from the General Fund and are restricted by voter-approved ballot language in how they may be used.

If you have questions about how District funds are structured or tracked, you can review our public budget documents or contact the District for more information.

🔥Fire Protection Services: Vegetative Fuels Mitigation & Community Wildfire Safety

The Pueblo West Fire Department administers the Vegetative Fuels and Mitigation Abatement Program to reduce wildfire risk caused by overgrown vegetation, weeds, and other combustible materials. All property owners—including homes, vacant lots, and parcels in No Standing Tracts—are responsible for maintaining their properties to reduce fire hazards.

Residents may report vegetative fuels concerns through the District’s online portal. Each report is reviewed by the Fire Department to determine whether mitigation or enforcement action is needed. The Fire Department has the authority to require abatement and issue fines when unsafe fire conditions are found.

Under this program, the Pueblo West Fire Department has the authority to inspect properties and determine whether conditions pose an unreasonable fire hazard. If a hazard is identified, the Fire Department may:
• Issue orders requiring mitigation or abatement
• Take corrective action if a property owner does not comply
• Assess penalties or fines for non compliance (up to $300)
• Recover the cost of mitigation services performed by or on behalf of the Fire Department

👉Fines may be assessed for violations and continued non compliance can result in additional penalties. Residents play an important role in wildfire prevention. Any resident may report a vegetative fuels concern if they believe a property poses a fire risk to surrounding areas.

Wildfire prevention is a shared responsibility. This program is designed to support cooperation between residents and the Fire Department to reduce risk, protect property values, and improve overall community safety.
