Mcswane Sentenced to 26 Years in DOC for Kidnapping and Attempted Aggravated Robbery
PUEBLO, Colo. – Shane Mcswane, 29, entered a guilty plea today to charges of Kidnapping and Attempted Aggravated Robbery, both classified as Class 4 felonies and designated as crimes of violence. The Judge imposed a 13-year sentence on each count consecutive to each other, for a total of 26-years in the Colorado Department of Corrections. Pursuant to statute, he will be required to serve 85 percent of the sentence before being eligible for parole, which is determined by the Colorado Department of Corrections.
On May 25, 2025, the victim, Ms. Grace Dotson, witnessed a crash occur in front of her and stopped to call “9-1-1” when the defendant, who was involved in the crash, forced his way into her vehicle and kidnapped her. He then proceeded to hold her captive for four hours while driving erratically and in multiple directions on I-25. At times the defendant would allow Ms. Dotson to answer phone calls from her frantic and terrified family members. After a vehicle pursuit, use of stop sticks, and a successful PIT maneuver by law enforcement, Pueblo County Sheriff Deputies and Huerfano County Deputies were able to successfully rescue Ms. Dotson.
Multiple family members, along with the victim, spoke at sentencing. They all described the worst four-hours of their lives on May 25, 2025, a nightmare, as they watched Ms. Dotson’s phone location head south on I-25 from Denver after she was kidnapped. Remarkably she and her family members all “hope that Mr. Mcswane does the work to be a better man when he is released someday.” Ms. Dotson and her family all thanked the multiple law enforcement agencies across Colorado for saving her life.
“We are inspired by the strength, resilience, and compassion of Ms. Dotson after surviving an unforgettable nightmare. Nobody can fully comprehend what Ms. Dotson endured that night, but she showed remarkable strength while addressing the court, with the defendant present, and carrying herself with such courage. We are profoundly grateful that she is alive, and we extend our heartfelt appreciation to our law enforcement partners for their unwavering dedication and heroic efforts to rescue Ms. Dotson.” District Attorney Kala Beauvais.
