FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

At approximately 9:26 p.m., the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office received a request from a family member to conduct a welfare check at 13658 Fancy Gap Highway.

Carroll County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the residence. Upon arrival, two deputies made contact with a male subject identified as Michael Puckett. During the encounter, Puckett opened fire on the responding deputies. Deputies returned fire.

Both deputies were struck by gunfire. One deputy sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased. The second deputy was struck in his ballistic vest and is currently receiving medical evaluation and is reported to be in stable condition.

Michael Puckett fled the scene and remains at large. A coordinated law enforcement search is currently underway.

Puckett should be considered armed and extremely dangerous. Anyone who sees him or has information regarding his whereabouts is urged not to approach him and to immediately call 911.

This remains an active and ongoing investigation. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.

❗️❗️SCAM ALERT❗️❗️

For your awareness, this is another type of scam going around. Individuals are taking information from Zillow/Realtor/etc. listings and have been posting them on TikTok as their own. When you contact these individuals, they request a deposit or application fee. Always check with a legitimate source, such as the actual realtor, before inquiring about listings like these. DO NOT GIVE PERSONAL INFORMATION TO PEOPLE YOU DO NOT KNOW.

The firearm recovered was a Springfield Hellcat pistol. At this time we do not have any further information. If you, or anyone you know believes this was their firearm have them contact Sgt. Phipps at 540-994-8680.

Edit: As of 05/13/2026, Backyard Butchers has been approved for a canvasser permit.

Town Code 58-35: It shall be unlawful for an itinerant merchant or peddler to engage in such business within this town without first obtaining a license in compliance with the provisions of this article.

We have received numerous reports of solicitors going door to door within the town. Solicitors must obtain a canvassing permit with the finance department before going door to door and have the permit on their person while soliciting. There are currently no active permits on file with our finance department. To discourage solicitors, consider placing a "No Soliciting" sign on your property.
