IMPORTANT NOTICE: Fairlawn Sewer Authority Customers
The Fairlawn Sewer Authority will conduct smoke testing of sewer lines in the Fairlawn area on Thursday, August 13, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Crews will open and enter manholes in public utility easements during the testing. This work helps locate breaks, cracks, and other defects in the sanitary sewer system.
A special, non-toxic smoke will be forced through the sewer lines. Residents may see smoke coming from cracks, drains, or other openings where problems exist. The smoke is designed for this type of testing. It leaves no residual odors or stains and has no effect on plant or animal life. Any visible smoke or odor should last only a few minutes where there is adequate ventilation.
What if smoke enters my home?
Smoke may enter a building if plumbing vents are inadequate, defective, or improperly installed, if traps under sinks, tubs, basins, or in basements are dry, or if there are cracks or openings in sewer lines.
If smoke enters your home, it may indicate that sewer gases and odors can also enter through the same opening. Residents may contact a member of the smoke-testing crew working in the area for help identifying where the smoke is entering. Residents are advised to locate and correct the source.
Information gathered through the testing will be used to help improve sewer service and may help reduce future costs to utility customers.
