The Pat Ingle Law Enforcement Youth Camp is off to a great start.

Day 1, the kids spent the day with Lt. David Robertson and Sgt. Ryne Goats. Some of the activities included learning to shoot air rifles and archery.

Day 2, THP Troopers Young, Logan and Orr brought out a THP Special Operations armored vehicle and a THP patrol car. There was also a Giles County EMS ambulance, an Air Evac helicopter out of Mount Pleasant and a Survival Flight Helicopter out of Ardmore that the kids were able to tour.

They all seem to be having a great time and the week is only halfway over.

TN ban on Kratom and 7-OH

The Tennessee bill prohibiting the possession, manufacture, sale, and delivery of kratom has been signed into law by the Governor and will take effect on July 1, 2026. Known as Matthew’s Law, it amends TCA 39-17-452. Here is what you need to know:

Possession of kratom is a Class A misdemeanor.
Manufacturing, delivering, or selling kratom is a Class C felony.
Delivering or selling kratom to a minor is a Class B felony.

Kratom has often been referred to as “gas station heroin” due to its opioid-like effects. Its use can result in serious health risks, including respiratory depression (slowed or stopped breathing), addiction, and physical dependence. Regular use may lead to increased tolerance, requiring larger amounts to achieve the same effects, and can cause severe withdrawal symptoms such as body aches, cold sweats, nausea, irritability, and insomnia.

Residents are encouraged to be aware of these changes and the legal consequences associated with possessing, selling, or distributing kratom after July 1, 2026.

Public Service Announcement

Over the past week, there have been two reported incidents involving foxes displaying behavior consistent with rabies or distemper. Fortunately, no individuals were bitten or scratched during these encounters. However, we would like to remind residents to use caution around wild animals that appear sick, disoriented, or unusually aggressive.

If you encounter a wild animal exhibiting abnormal behavior, please do not approach or attempt to handle it. Instead, contact the Giles County Animal Control Officer by calling Giles E-911 at 931-363-3505 to report the animal.

If you or your pet are ever bitten or scratched by a wild animal, seek medical or veterinary attention immediately.
