Celebrating Kids Who Do the Right Thing!

Yesterday, we were proud to hold our first Do The Right Thing ceremony of the 2026-2027 school year. We recognized five amazing young people for the positive choices they’ve made and the example they set for others.

It’s always a great day when we get to celebrate kids in our community for showing kindness, courage, responsibility, and character. Congratulations to all of our honorees. 👏

📅 Our next Do The Right Thing ceremony will be October 1 at 3:30 p.m. at the FSW Auditorium.

We can’t wait to recognize even more young people who are making a positive difference in our community.

🇺🇸 Labor Day Weekend is Almost Here!

The long weekend starts tomorrow, and we know many of you will be hitting the road, heading out on the water, or enjoying everything Punta Gorda has to offer.

As you make your plans, remember a few simple things: slow down, buckle up, designate a sober driver or boat operator, and keep an eye on our unpredictable Florida weather.

Our officers will be out there throughout the weekend helping keep Punta Gorda safe.

Have fun, make good choices, and look out for one another. We want everyone to make it home safely. 💙

🚨 86 MPH IN A 35 MPH ZONE

On August 30, 2026, Officer Gray conducted a traffic stop on East Marion Avenue after observing a vehicle traveling 86 MPH in a posted 35 MPH zone - 51 MPH over the speed limit.

The driver, Joseph William Boisvert, was arrested and transported to the Charlotte County Jail without incident.

Boisvert was charged with:
• F.S.S. 316.1926 – Dangerous Excessive Speeding
• F.S.S. 322.34(2) – Driving While License Suspended or Revoked with Knowledge
• F.S.S. 322.32(1) – Unlawful use/possession of a driver license

Driving at excessive speeds significantly reduces reaction time and increases the severity of crashes. Our officers will continue conducting traffic enforcement throughout the City of Punta Gorda to help keep our roadways safe.

Early Morning Burglary Leads to Arrest of Three Juveniles

At approximately 3:30 a.m. this morning, Punta Gorda Police officers responded to a burglary that had just occurred at Harbor Smokes, located at 2310 Tamiami Trail.

Three juvenile suspects had entered the business after smashing the front glass door and stealing multiple items.

Through a coordinated effort between the Punta Gorda Police Department and the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office, all three juveniles were located and taken into custody within hours of the burglary.

Our officers utilized our department drone and K9 team during the search, with additional assistance provided by the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office K9 team.

We appreciate the teamwork and cooperation between our agencies that helped bring this incident to a quick resolution.

This remains an active investigation. Due to the suspects being juveniles, no identifying information is being released.

It’s National Dog Day, Punta Gorda!

We may be a little biased, but we think our department has some pretty special dogs.

From the moment they walk through the door, K9 SpongeBob and K9 Sasha make an impression.

K9 SpongeBob, our therapy dog, brings a little extra comfort and plenty of smiles wherever he goes with Lt. Davoult. Sometimes a wagging tail and a friendly face are exactly what someone needs after a tough day.

K9 Sasha, partnered with Officer Jesse Richards, puts her skills to work protecting our community. She’s focused, determined, and always ready to get to work.

Behind every great working dog is a dedicated handler, and we’re grateful for the partnerships that make their work possible.
So today, we’re celebrating SpongeBob, Sasha, and every dog who brings loyalty, comfort, companionship, or a little chaos into our lives.

Our Marine Volunteers are always looking out for our community, sometimes in ways you might not expect! 🐰💙
During a recent patrol, Marine Volunteer Mark Williams and Marine Volunteer Tom Bell spotted a bunny rabbit struggling after falling into one of our waterways. Without hesitation, they safely rescued the little rabbit and gave it a second chance.
While our Marine Volunteers dedicate countless hours to helping keep our waterways safe for boaters, moments like this remind us that they also care deeply about the wildlife that calls Punta Gorda home.
Thank you, Mark and Tom, for your compassion, quick actions, and continued commitment to serving our community, on the water and beyond!

ALL CLEAR — CHARLOTTE HIGH SCHOOL

The precautionary soft lockdown at Charlotte High School has been lifted.

Officers have completed their assessment, and there is no known threat to Charlotte High School or any of our local schools at this time.

We appreciate the cooperation of students, staff, parents, and the community while officers worked to ensure everyone’s safety.

Charlotte High School is currently on a soft lockdown as a precaution while officers are on scene investigating a reported concern.

At this time, there is no known or immediate threat to Charlotte High School or any of our local schools.

Officers will remain on scene while the situation is assessed. We will provide additional information if circumstances change or further updates become necessary.

🌧️ THAT “PUDDLE” MAY BE DEEPER THAN YOU THINK

Rainy season is here, and heavy rainfall can quickly leave some Punta Gorda streets covered with water.

If you encounter a flooded roadway:

🚫 Don’t assume you know how deep it is.
Water can hide potholes, debris, damaged pavement or other hazards.

🚗 Don’t follow another vehicle through.
Just because they made it doesn’t mean your vehicle will. If you do have a high-water capable vehicle and must travel through flooded areas, drive very slowly and with extreme caution. The wake (wave) created by vehicles can push water up onto people’s properties and cause damage.

⚠️ Never drive around barricades or road-closed signs.
They’re there for a reason.

🌙 Use extra caution at night.
It can be especially difficult to judge the depth of water after dark.

↩️ When in doubt, turn around and find another route.

It only takes about 12 inches of moving water to carry away many vehicles.

A few extra minutes taking another route is always better than taking a chance.
