The Public Works Department builds and maintains roadways, bridges, navigable waterways, stormwater infrastructure, traffic lights and signs, rights-of-ways and landscaping in unincorporated areas of Charlotte County while protecting and preserving the environment. The Department further provides solid waste management including curbside service and operation of the landfill, manages mosquito and aquatic w**d control programs and operates the Indian Spring and Lieutenant Carl Bailey Cemeteries.

Oct. 16 | Edgewater Drive between Cousley Drive and Beeny Road will have intermittent lane closures 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday Oct. 19 through Friday, Oct 30 for Lumos Fiber to install underground fiber.

Travelers are directed to a detour with signage and should allow extra time when planning to travel through this area.

The Public Works Department reminds motorists to remain alert at all times and to exercise caution when traveling in the vicinity of construction zones.

We love hearing from residents about the work our Charlotte County Public Works team does!

Following the completion of the Cutler project, one resident reached out to share their appreciation for the team’s professionalism, dedication, and outstanding restoration work.

The resident shared that the property didn’t just look good after the project was complete — it looked GREAT!

Even more impressive, the resident recognized the challenges the crew faced along the way and praised the quality of the finished project.

❓Do You Know the 72-Hour Call ‘Rule of Thumb’? This rule applies to stormwater or the water in your swale or drainage ditch. After a rain event, wait 72-hours before calling Public Works. 🦺

Why…because the water can take that long to flow through the drainage system. This is to help remove pollutants from entering our larger waterbodies. If the water is moving, the system is working. The swale may still have water in it after this time frame but if it is lower, this means the system is working.

What if it rains again before the 72-hour timeframe? You must restart the clock and wait another 72-hours after each rain event.

There are areas in Charlotte County that are close to tidal waters that are heavily influenced by both the tides and ground water levels. They may experience more or continuous water in the swales.

If you believe you have an issue with your drainage system, please call Public Works 941.575.3600

Drainage requests are prioritized based on the following factors:
• Stormwater threatening personal property (flooding homes)
• Stormwater over the road and/or sidewalk
• Stormwater in a drainage swale
