Procession Route for Jay Sanders Funeral on June 25 ❗🚒

Members of the public who wish to pay their respects are encouraged to safely gather along the procession route. If Jay impacted your life, this is an opportunity to stand with us one as we honor our brother and celebrate a life dedicated to service.

📍 Procession details:
• Begin on Harborside Avenue (exiting the Event Center)
• Left on U.S. 41 North (Tamiami Trail)
• Right on County Road 769 (Kings Highway)
• Right on Harbor View Road
• Left on Rio De Janeiro Avenue
• Left on Rampart Boulevard
• Right on Kings Highway
• Left on Veterans Boulevard
• Right on U.S. 41 North (Tamiami Trail)
• Left on Chamberlain Boulevard
• Left on Eisenhower Drive

The procession is expected to begin at approximately 3 p.m., though the exact start time may vary based on the conclusion of services and procession staging.

Motorists should expect temporary traffic delays along the route and are encouraged to plan accordingly.

Honoring a Life of Service. Remembering a Brother. 🖤🚒

Together with the Sanders family, Charlotte County Fire & EMS will honor the life, service, and sacrifice of Firefighter/Paramedic Jan A. “Jay” Sanders Jr. during his Last Alarm on Thursday, June 25, 2026.

Jay dedicated more than 35 years to serving the citizens and visitors of Charlotte County as a firefighter, paramedic, mentor, and friend. From the firehouse to the front lines of wildland fires across the western United States, Jay answered every call with dedication, professionalism, and a heart for helping others.

Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. at the Charlotte Harbor Event & Conference Center, with doors opening at 11:30 a.m.

Following the service, firefighters, first responders, and public safety personnel from across the region will participate in a procession honoring Jay’s life and legacy. Community members wishing to pay their respects are encouraged to safely line the procession route. Route details will be announced soon.

For more than three decades, Jay was there when others needed him most. On June 25, we will gather to thank him for his service, honor his sacrifice, and sound his final call.

Today, we celebrate the dads who answer the call both at home and in our community.

To the fathers of Charlotte County Fire & EMS, thank you for the sacrifices you make every day. Whether you’re working holidays, missing family dinners, coaching ballgames after a long shift, or being the steady voice your family can count on, your impact reaches far beyond the firehouse.

A few flowers appeared on Engine 15 today. 💐

The first of what we know will be many tributes to Firefighter/Paramedic Jay Sanders.

Engine 15, Jay’s last assigned apparatus, has been draped in mourning bunting and placed on display at Charlotte County Fire & EMS Headquarters, 26571 Airport Road, Punta Gorda. The memorial will remain in place through Wednesday, June 24.

We invite those who wish to honor Jay’s life and service to stop by and pay their respects. Flowers, cards, patches, challenge coins, and other memorial items are welcome.

As this memorial grows, so too will the visible reminder of the impact Jay had on our department, our profession, and our community during more than 35 years of service.

It is with profound sadness that Charlotte County Fire & EMS announces the line-of-duty death of Firefighter/Paramedic Jan A. “Jay” Sanders Jr., who passed away on June 18, 2026, following a courageous battle with occupational cancer.

For more than 35 years, Jay served the citizens and visitors of Charlotte County with honor, compassion, and dedication. A mentor, firefighter, paramedic, Honor Guard member, and friend, his impact on this department and community cannot be measured.

Jay will be remembered for his larger-than-life personality, infectious laugh, unmistakable voice, and the countless lives he touched throughout his career.

In the days ahead, Charlotte County Fire & EMS will honor Jay with his Last Alarm. While the radio may sound one final time, his legacy will continue to live on through the generations of firefighters and paramedics he helped shape.

Rest easy, Jay. We’ve got it from here. 🖤🚒

This week, we presented Phoenix Awards to Charlotte County Sheriff's Office dispatcher Emily Tems and Charlotte County Fire & EMS personnel FF/EMT Steven Dunn, Lt. Darren Lamb, Lt. James Wilcox, FF/EMT Jacob Holland, FF/EMT Brett Johnson, and FM Caleb VanHelden.

A Phoenix Award recognizes the successful resuscitation of a patient who suffered a sudden cardiac arrest and was later discharged with a positive outcome. It represents the combined efforts of dispatchers, first responders, nurses, physicians, and many others in the chain of survival.

When a caller dialed 9-1-1, Dispatcher Emily Tems quickly recognized the emergency and provided pre-arrival CPR instructions, helping the caller begin lifesaving chest compressions before crews arrived on scene. That immediate action, combined with the care provided by responding personnel and hospital staff, helped give the patient the best possible chance at survival.

A new ARFF truck has officially rolled into service. ✈️

Today, Charlotte County Fire & EMS, Punta Gorda Airport, and the Charlotte County Airport Authority welcomed A-71, a new Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) apparatus, during a traditional push-in ceremony at Station 7.

The new vehicle was purchased by the Airport Authority with 90% funding from the FAA, and was manufactured by the Rosenbauer Group in Minnesota. This state-of-the-art vehicle replaces a truck that has faithfully served PGD since 2008 and will help ensure firefighters are prepared to respond to aircraft emergencies.

The push-in ceremony honors a long-standing fire service tradition while celebrating the future of aviation safety in Charlotte County.

We are ready to serve every traveler who passes through PGD.

EVOC update: The cones fought back, and one chose adoption. 🚒😂

Just another day of EVOC training as our newest recruits learn the skills needed to safely operate emergency vehicles. No cones were harmed in the making of this video… well, at least not permanently.

Every lap is one step closer to answering the call. 🔥
