The Purchase Fire Department responded to a total of 70 incidents during the month of February.

It was another busy winter month, as persistent cold temperatures and a late-season blizzard impacted the region. Purchase firefighters handled numerous weather-related emergencies, including water issues caused by frozen pipes, along with over a dozen vehicle accidents throughout the month.

Among the more notable responses was a second-alarm house fire in the Village of Mamaroneck, where our members worked alongside mutual aid departments to bring the incident under control.

Additional significant February responses included:

โ€ข (2) Auto extrications
โ€ข (2) Motor vehicle fires
โ€ข (2) Aircraft standbys

Throughout February, our members remained committed to training. Firefighters participated in multiple hands-on training sessions at our firehouse. Members also attended New York State training programs and county-level courses through the Westchester Weekly Drill Series, further expanding their knowledge and skillsets.

In anticipation of severe winter weather, staffing levels were increased during weather-related standbys to ensure rapid response coverage for the Purchase community. These proactive measures strengthened our ability to respond quickly and effectively when needed most.

On Sunday afternoon, the Purchase Fire Department, Port Chester Fire Department (Rescue 40), and Harrison EMS were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident involving extrication. First arriving units from the Harrison Police Department confirmed a vehicle had left the roadway, traveled into the woods, and rolled over down a ravine, coming to rest on its side with two parties trapped inside.

Firefighters from Purchase and Port Chester worked together to stabilize the vehicle in the challenging terrain. Crews utilized hydraulic rescue tools and reciprocating saws to perform a partial roof removal, creating sufficient access to safely remove the occupants. One occupant was able to exit the vehicle prior to emergency services arrival.

In total, three individuals involved in the crash were transported by Harrison EMS and Port Chester EMS to a local hospital.

While this incident was going on the West Harrison and Harrison Fire Departments provided coverage for the Purchase Fire Department.

Earlier this morning, the Purchase Fire Department, along with a West Harrison Engine and a Harrison Tower Ladder, were dispatched to Beverly Road for reports of smoke inside a structure and multiple alarm activations. Shortly after dispatch, 60 Control received an additional call reporting a basement fire, and that all occupants had safely evacuated the home. Car 2412 subsequently requested Rescue 40 and a F.A.S.T. (Firefighter Assist & Search Team) from the Valhalla Fire Department.

Upon arrival and investigation, firefighters located a small fire within an HVAC unit in the basement. Crews quickly isolated the affected unit, preventing any extension to the surrounding area. Units remained on scene to ventilate the structure before returning to service.

The homeowner was alerted by a sounding smoke alarm, allowing for quick evacuation and prompt notification to emergency services. This incident serves as another important reminder that smoke detectors save lives.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to our mutual aid partners for their assistance and continued support.

The Purchase Fire Department responded to a total of 67 incidents during the month of January. It was a busy start to the year, with colder than normal temperatures and Winter Storm Fern impacting the tri-state area, resulting in numerous weather-related responses, including motor vehicle accidents, water conditions from frozen pipes, and alarm activations.

Our firefighters completed extensive training throughout the month, including annual bailout refresher, F.A.S.T. training, the Westchester Weekly Drill Series, building familiarization walkthroughs, Lt. Andy Fredricksโ€™ Annual Seminar, and our in-house Officer Development Program.

The department continued its commitment to professional development, with more than 9 firefighters completing two modules of the New York State Fire Officer I course that is currently being held at our firehouse.

As we remain in a deep freeze at the start of February, please keep these cold-weather safety tips in mind:

โ€ข Insulate exposed pipes
โ€ข Use space heaters safely and keep them away from combustible materials.
โ€ข Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms regularly.
โ€ข Dress in warm layers and limit time outdoors.
โ€ข Drive cautiously on icy roads and keep an emergency kit in your vehicle.
โ€ข Check on elderly neighbors and those who may need assistance.

As always, if you need us, your all-volunteer fire department is staffed and prepared to respond 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

This past year was another exceptionally busy one for the Purchase Fire Department. While emergency call volume is often highlighted in annual reports, it represents only a portion of the time, effort, and dedication our volunteer members contribute in service to the community.

Over the course of the year, the department responded to a total of 727 alarms, including (13) 10-75โ€™s (Working Structure Fires), (12) Auto Extrications, and approximately 150 motor vehicle accidents. In addition, our members handled more than 165 automatic and mutual aid responses in support of neighboring departments.

Beyond emergency operations, our volunteers devoted hundreds of hours to training, equipment maintenance, and essential administrative functions. Most importantly, they ensured continuous staffing of our all-volunteer firehouse 24 hours a day, seven days a week through our live-in/bunk-in program. This program allows qualified volunteer firefighters to reside at the firehouse, providing immediate response capability at all hours. By maintaining on-site staffing, the live-in program significantly reduces response times, enhances operational effectiveness, and strengthens overall community safety. Participants commit substantial personal time to the department, balancing emergency response, training, station duties, and professional or academic responsibilities. Their dedication is a cornerstone of our ability to deliver reliable, high-quality fire protection services not only to the residents of Purchase, but also to our neighboring communities.

We are deeply grateful for the unwavering commitment of our members and for the continued support of the Purchase community and our mutual aid partners, who stand ready to assist whenever called upon. Your ongoing support enables us to fulfill our mission of protecting lives and property. We wish you a happy, healthy, and safe New Year.

Established in 2008 and the first program of its kind in Westchester County, the program continues to grow each year. Since its inception, dozens of members have gone on to careers in the fire service across the tri-state area and beyond. As a live-in member, youโ€™ll receive extensive training, gain significant real-world experience, and become part of a dedicated and professional team. Interested? Yesterday, the Purchase Fire Department responded to several major mutual aid incidents.

At 4:20 PM, Cars 2411, 2413, and Rescue 30 responded automatic aid to Port Chester for a serious motor vehicle accident involving a vehicle trapped beneath a tractor trailer on Interstate 95. Shortly after clearing that scene, units were dispatched to a multi-car accident with entrapment on Interstate 287 within the Port Chester Fire District. Upon arrival, members encountered a mass casualty incident (MCI) involving five vehicles. Purchase firefighters assisted our mutual aid partners with extrication operations and patient care for multiple injured parties.

Later that evening, just before 9 pm, Cars 2411, 2413, and Engine 241 were relocating to Valhalla in response to a 10-75 (Working Fire) when the Purchase F.A.S.T (Firefighter Assist & Search Team) was redirected to the fire scene. A 2nd alarm was quickly transmitted for an advanced fire in a private dwelling. Firefighters from several mutual aid departments were met with heavy fire conditions in the attic and heavy clutter in the home.
