Last week, Lamar County Library System was honored to be represented at the Freedom 250 Library Convening: *Telling America’s Story* in Atlanta, Georgia. Our Director, Brianna Williams, was also invited to serve on a panel alongside library leaders from across the South to discuss the important role libraries play in preserving and sharing local and national history.

Mississippi was incredibly well represented by the Mississippi Library Commission’s Executive Director and several outstanding library directors and librarians from across the state. The convening provided opportunities to collaborate, exchange ideas, and explore new ways libraries can engage communities through storytelling, history, and education.

Participants also toured the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library & Museum, the Atlanta History Center, and Fernbank Museum, gaining valuable insight and inspiration to bring back home to our community.

We are proud to have Lamar County Library System represented at conversations like these and look forward to using what was learned to continue serving our community in meaningful ways.

Thank you to the Institute of Museum and Library Services for this incredible opportunity.

Last night, Purvis experienced unimaginable devastation as a tornado tore through our community, leaving behind damaged homes, destroyed businesses, blocked roads, and countless families facing heartbreaking loss.

Today, we are holding our neighbors close in our thoughts and prayers. We are incredibly grateful for the first responders, linemen, road crews, volunteers, and everyday citizens who immediately stepped in to help others through the night.

The Lamar County Library System will be OPEN to serve our community in whatever ways we can. If you need a place to charge devices, access Wi-Fi, use a computer, cool off, rest for a moment, or simply connect with loved ones, our doors are open.

Please continue to use caution while traveling, as many areas are still unsafe and cleanup efforts are ongoing. Most importantly, please continue to check on one another.

Purvis is hurting today, but this community is strong, resilient, and full of people who care deeply for one another. We will rebuild together. 💜💛

Due to severe weather and tornado damage in portions of the Purvis area overnight, the Purvis Branch Library will delay opening today until 12:00 PM for the safety of our patrons and staff, as well as to avoid interfering with emergency response and cleanup efforts currently underway.

We are incredibly thankful that our branch did not sustain damage, and we extend our sincere gratitude to the Lamar County Road Department, the Lamar County Sheriff’s Office, and the Purvis Police Department for their hard work, dedication, and continued efforts to keep our community safe during this time.

Once we open at noon, the library will be available for anyone needing a quiet place to sit, charge devices, access Wi-Fi, cool off, or simply take a breath. The library is here for our community.

Please continue to stay safe, Purvis. 💜💛
