ITM stands for Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance — and it's the framework that governs how fire protection systems are kept in working order under NFPA standards.

-Inspection involves visually verifying that system components are in place and undamaged.
-Testing confirms that those components actually function as designed — flow alarms sound, valves operate, backup power activates.

Any time a fire protection system or even a portion of it is taken out of service, it's considered an impairment under NFPA 25, and specific rules kick in immediately.

The building owner or facility manager must notify the local fire department, the monitoring company, and in some cases the insurance carrier.

If the system will be offline for more than four hours in a 24-hour period, a fire watch is required — meaning trained personnel must physically patrol the affected area at set intervals until the system is restored.

For planned impairments like maintenance or construction work, these steps can be coordinated in advance. For emergency impairments due to a break or equipment failure, the clock starts immediately.
