Any donated items for residents affected by the Purvis tornado can be delivered to First Baptist Church of Purvis, 77 Shelby Speights Dr. or Developing Family Services, 127 Front St. Purvis.

Nearly two weeks after a tornado ripped through the area, Lamar County Emergency Management (EMA) says they are working diligently towards a federal declaration for the county, which would mean more assistance for everyone impacted.

Lamar County EMA Director James Smith says this is a complicated process that starts at the local level. ⬇️

Traffic Alert for Tornado Area

Beginning Friday the 15th, Lamar County Road Department will start debris removal in the areas of the recent tornado. Please be aware the roadways in this area may be closed or restricted at times in order to ease the removal process. We ask everyone to please be patient and heed all direction given by Road Department crews.

Crews will only be able to remove debris from the public right of way. We are not able to enter private property to remove debris. We ask that material be separated vegetative verse demolition debris.

Countywide Other Services Reduced.

During this time period of debris removal, other Road Department services may be reduced on a day to day basis in order to provide sufficient manpower for the tornado clean up effort. Please be patient as well, on non-storm related services during this time period.

Still Needing Assistance With Debris Push-Out

If you need assistance in getting material roadside and have not gotten in contact with a non-profit, you may contact our Emergency Management office. 601-794-5378

If you were affected by the tornado and have any unmet needs the American Red Cross will be at Good Hope Baptist Church, 331 Purvis Oloh Rd. from 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Thursday, May 14, 2026.

Storm Relief Help Available in Purvis

Purvis First Baptist Church and Good Hope Baptist Church have distribution centers available for anyone affected by the tornado. First Baptist Church has food and clothing. Good Hope Baptist Church has food, water, cleaning kits and personal hygiene kits.

Large Appliances: Refrigerators, washers, stoves. (Note: Secure the doors so they cannot lock, and remove all food before placing curbside).

Construction Debris: Drywall, lumber, carpet, furniture.

Vegetative Waste: Tree branches, leaves, and plants.

Place piles by the curb or road shoulder on your property line.

Do not place debris on top of or near live cables, fire hydrants, utility meters, or live trees.

Do not block the street or roadway. Heavy trucks will need to pass through.
