Happy Fun Fact Friday!

Did you know glaciers helped shape South Bass Island into the landscape we know today? As massive ice sheets carved through the region, they shaped the island’s bedrock and contributed to the formation of Lake Erie.

That glacial history also helped create the soils, rocky habitats, wetlands, shorelines, and other unique environments that support the wide variety of plants and wildlife found across the Lake Erie Islands today.

Next time you’re exploring South Bass Island, remember the landscape beneath your feet has a story thousands of years in the making!

Put-in-Bay Monarch Fest is less than a month away! Start planning your trip to the island to join us for this third annual event at Duggan Field next to the lighthouse from 11am-2pm. There will be inflatables, games, music, face painting, and lots of educational activities. We are thrilled to announce that Lance Saunders will be cooking his amazing authentic Jamaican food at the event, this is a local favorite you don't want to miss! We are also excited that the Put-in-Bay Twirlers will be performing at 11:30am during the event! New this year is Monarch-themed yoga with Melany Gladieux on the lighthouse grounds at 10 am, before the event. Also, we are introducing a scavenger hunt for more family fun during the event. OSU Stone Lab will be doing tours of the lighthouse as well.

🦋So much fun packed into one day, plan to join us for this annual celebration of pollinators!

We are still looking for sponsors and volunteers, contact us if you are able to help!

Thank you so much to our sponsors: Shores & Islands Ohio, Put-in-Bay Chamber of Commerce & Tourism Bureau, First Energy, the Penny Plus Store, and E's Golf Carts.

Fun Fact Friday! Did you know monarch butterflies can migrate up to 3,000 miles each year?

These incredible travelers make their way across North America from their summer breeding grounds to their overwintering home in Mexico. Along the way, places like the Lake Erie Islands provide important habitat for monarchs to rest and refuel during their long journey.
