On June 18, 2026, during the Mayotte Viens Post 13 American Legion Installation of Officers and Awards Program, Officer Kyle Maheu was honored as the 2026 Police Officer of the Year.
Officer Maheu is a 17 year veteran of the Putnam Police Department and currently serves as the School Resource Officer for the Putnam Public School System—a role he has held since the start of the 2022 school year. Each day, he demonstrates exceptional dedication to the school community. He actively engages with students as a positive role model, works closely with faculty and staff to maintain a safe and supportive environment, and provides leadership and oversight to the School Safety Officers.
Beyond his daily responsibilities, Officer Maheu brings extensive specialized training and experience to the department. He is a Certified Crisis Intervention Officer, trained to assist individuals experiencing mental health crises. He is also a certified Police Mountain Bike Operator and previously served as a narcotics investigator and undercover officer with the Connecticut Statewide Narcotics Task Force – East Office.
