Every school day begins with students arriving ready to learn, and nutrition services staff play an important role in helping make that possible. This week's Puyallup Praise recognizes Tina Stone, Kitchen Lead at Sunrise Elementary (Sunrise Elementary | ).

Nominated recently by Valerie Bennett, a School Support Paraeducator at Sunrise, she shares:

"Tina goes above and beyond for our superstars at both breakfast and lunch! She knows every student by name and if they have any allergies or special dietary needs. We serve a large amount of kids, especially in the morning, and she gets them through the line quickly and with a smile."

We thank Tina for being such a positive influence on our students and for making sure they are known by name and seen every single day.

Come back next Sunday to see who the next recipient of Puyallup Praise will be. In the meantime, we hope the summer break is off to a great start for all of you!

Juneteenth is a day of remembrance, reflection, and celebration. Observed each year on June 19, it commemorates the day freedom was finally announced to the last enslaved African Americans in Texas, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

The significance of Juneteenth extends beyond a single moment in history. It invites us to reflect on the ongoing journey toward a more perfect union and to recognize the resilience, contributions, and achievements of Black Americans whose stories continue to shape our nation.

In observance of the Juneteenth holiday, all Puyallup School District offices will be closed. We encourage our community to explore the history of Juneteenth and the many ways its legacy continues to inspire learning, understanding, and hope.

Some people are remembered for what they do. Others are remembered for how they make people feel.

As Puyallup School District SRO "Officer Dan" prepares to retire from law enforcement, Maplewood Elementary students and staff came together for a special "Dan Walk" to celebrate and thank him for the difference he has made over the years. The hallways were filled with cheers, handmade signs, confetti, and countless smiles as students showed their appreciation for someone who has always been there for them.

Thank you, Officer Dan, for your service, your care for students, and the many lives you've touched along the way. Congratulations on a well-earned retirement.

The hallways and classrooms will be a little quieter. Students and families will head off on summer adventures. Staff will enjoy a well-earned break. But this isn’t goodbye. It’s simply, “see you soon.”

Thank you to our students, staff and families for an incredible 180 days of learning, growth, and connection. Have a wonderful summer, Puyallup. We’ll look forward to welcoming you all back this fall.

(And shout-out to Sunrise Elementary for allowing us to capture their “see you soon” moments from earlier today!)

Every day, office professionals are among the first people students, families, and staff connect with at school. Their kindness, compassion, and dedication to helping others creates school environments where everyone feels welcome and supported.

This week's Puyallup Praise showcases Northwood Elementary’s Denise Oatman, who was nominated by Madison Peterson, one of our district's substitute office professionals.

Madison shares: "Denise has the warmest heart and genuinely cares about the success and well-being of every student and colleague she works with. She consistently goes above and beyond to support others, always wanting the very best for both her students and her coworkers. Denise is truly a joy to work with, bringing kindness, positivity, and encouragement to every interaction."

Denise's caring approach and commitment to others makes a positive difference throughout the Northwood Elementary community.

Thank you Denise! And come back next week to see who receives the next Puyallup Praise!

Recognizing Flag Day on June 14

Observed annually on June 14, Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the United States flag by the Second Continental Congress on June 14, 1777.

The day serves as an opportunity to reflect on the history of the American flag and its role as a symbol of the nation. Communities across the country mark the occasion through educational activities, ceremonies, and displays of the flag.

Puyallup School District recognizes Flag Day and the historical significance it represents.
