This is exactly right, not only as an expression of solidarity and allyship but also as a practical political matter, on the folly of "importing an international conflict into our municipal institutions and making Jewish Montrealers bear responsibility for the actions of a foreign government."

Of course this applies well beyond Montreal. Local governments everywhere that have no business taking sides in a geopolitical conflict on the other side of the world. Meaningless virtue-signaling statements do nothing to help or resolve, or even attempt to understand, the conflict. These initiatives only distract from the business of running a municipality or county, while sowing division in the local community and often physically endangering a local minority group.

Sarah Ettedgui@SarahEttedguiThere is something deeply meaningful about this kind of allyship. The Hellenic Community of Greater Montreal publicly called on City Council to reject the August 24 motion, warning against importing an international conflict into our municipal institutions and making Jewi...

Please reach out to your elected officials (anywhere in the country) urging them to stand up to the antisemitic fringes of both parties and to publicly condemn antisemitic rhetoric, symbols, conspiracy theories, and extremist associations. The ADL makes it very simple to do with this online form: https://action.adl.org/a/reject-antisemitism?sourceid=wa4future.

Thank you Friends of Mari Leavitt - D and Chris Corry for State Representative - R for urging the University of Washington not to give a platform to a bigot and hater. Promoting an anti-American message would not have been a good look for a public university.

Before anybody shouts "academic freedom" and "free speech," please note:

(a) this was to be a public lecture by a non-academic, not an intellectual research project or exchange of ideas, where of course different views should be explored and studied; and

(b) denying a public platform does not amount to "censorship." The university has its own free-speech rights to decide which speakers and what messages to promulgate.

Two lawmakers, one Republican and one Democrat, reached out to the University of Washington after hearing the left-wing streamer was invited to speak on campus.

WBF is part of a broader trend of local, grassroots political activism in communities around the country. We are connected with the effort coordinated by the Schusterman Family Philanthropies, described in this article, as well as (via our the national umbrella organization, the Campaign Against Hate) the group in Colorado quoted here. Antisemitism is a global scourge -- but politics, as U.S. House Speaker Tip O’Neill famously said, is local

This is why we do what we do. Civic and political engagement, and support from our elected officials, are critical to the safety of the Jewish community -- and everyone else.

The city released the statistics the day after JNS reported that from Jan. 1, 2023, until the end of this past January, Jews were the targets of 9.1% of all hate crimes in Seattle.
