Emergency calls don't stop because of bad weather or freezing temperatures. At 7:40 this morning Engine 63 was dispatched to cover Quakertown Fire Company Number 1 while they along with other area companies battled a building fire. Engine 63 with a crew of 4 responded to cover, while en route command requested more manpower due to conditions along with the extreme cold temperatures and high winds and engine 63 was requested to respond directly into the scene to assist the other crews. The engine crew remained on scene for approximately 3 hours until being released by command.

Just after 7 this evening Haycock Fire Company #1 was dispatched to the 300 block of Old Bethlehem Rd for tactical box 63-02 for fumes inside a dwelling. Engine 63 with a crew of 3 was en route within seconds of dispatch. While en route an updated report was given for a patient and dog not responsive and a strong odor of smoke in the dwelling. Chief 63 immediately upgraded the assignment while en route to bring in more resources. Upon arrival the patient was already taken out of the dwelling, Engine 63's crew entered the dwelling; with gas meters reading over 1200 ppm carbon monoxide, the engine crew performed a primary search and was able to locate the lifeless dog. The crew rapidly extricated the dog from the house and began cpr and placing their air pack on the dog until more help arrived, while the medics tended to the patient. As mutual aid companies arrived they assisted with the resuscitation efforts on the dog as well as a secondary search of the dwelling and locating the source of the smoke and CO. Tanker 63 and Tanker 56 stood by at the end of the driveway ready to supply water to the scene if needed.

We want to thank all of our mutual aid partners for the support and outstanding efforts tonight

Through an outstanding effort by all involved the dog was revived and began breathing on its own and was transported by firefighters on scene to the vet for further evaluation and treatment. As well as the patient was transported to the local hospital for further evaluation and treatments.

This is a stark reminder of how dangerous carbon monoxide can be as it's odorless and can't be seen giving it the nickname the "silent killer". As we enter into the colder months it is important to remember to have working carbon monoxide detectors. If the detector alarms do not disregard it's warning get to fresh air immediately and alert 911.

We've been hearing for a while now that there are these neat things; typically along the roadways, that a fire truck can hook a hose to and magically water appears to supply water to the fire truck. We've heard that they are called fire hydrants. After searching our coverage area high and low we couldn't seem to find any.

As a fire department in a rural area without a public water system this is not an uncommon challenge we face. Fire departments all across our area all face these same challenges when battling a fire in areas with no public water system. We all train to overcome these obstacles and be efficient in getting water to the fires by other methods.

So this past Thursday for training our members headed to the lake in an effort to maintain proficiency and review different drafting techniques on our trucks to ensure in the event of a fire we can get water. This is a vital skill; on top of many other skills, that we practice over and over again throughout the year to make sure it stays second nature for our crew. We even took the time to get Field 63; a 1969 f250 brush truck, out to train new drivers on techniques of drafting water and get new drivers qualified on it.

We're always looking to pass our passion for helping others on to the next generation of firefighters so stop by our station on Thursday nights starting at 6:30 and come out and see what it's all about that we do and see what you can do to help give back to your community.
