While walking along the Lily Pond, you might spot one of our favorite early spring blooms: the Trout Lily!

Named for the mottled, trout-like pattern on its leaves, this delicate yellow flower only blooms for a short window each spring before disappearing until next year.

🌱 A single Trout Lily plant can take up to 7 years before it flowers for the first time. These plants thrive in rich, undisturbed woodlands and are an important early nectar source for pollinators just waking up after winter.

Because they grow so slowly, Trout Lilies are especially vulnerable to being picked or trampled, so please watch where you step!

“Just passing through… oh, why hello there! ” - Painted Turtle 🐢

Spring has everyone on the move here at Tohi, including our Eastern Painted Turtles! As temperatures warm, we often notice more turtles traveling between our large pond and the Tohickon Creek in search of food, mates, and nesting sites.

This is an important seasonal journey, but also a vulnerable time. You are more likely to encounter them crossing trails or roads along your path…

If you see a turtle, make sure to give it plenty of space and let it keep going. Don’t worry, they know exactly where they’re headed! 🌱
