JIFCO Director, Col. Douglas Peterson, recently visited Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division to meet with members of the Dahlgren team. While there, he also saw demonstrations of Radio Frequency Pre-Emplaced Vehicle Stopper (RF-PEVS).

JIFCO has been working on Directed Energy (DE) capabilities to combat these exact situations.

Technologies such as the Radio Frequency Pre-Emplaced Vehicle Stopper (RF-PEVS) is a reactive system intended to stop vehicles by interrupting its normal operations to deny unauthorized access to an area.

The pair drove past a holding area in Quantico, Virginia, as military police prepared to administer the standard vetting procedures.

Last week JIFCO staff had the opportunity to sit down with the Commandant of the U.S. Army Military Police School (USAMPS) in Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo., to discuss new developments and initiatives JIFCO is working on to aid in force protection. Capabilities such as Commonly Remotely Operated Weapon Station (CROWS) Escalation of Force (EoF), Radio Frequency Pre-Emplaced Vehicle Stopper (RF-PEVS), Radio Frequency Vehicle Stopper (RFVS)-SR Scorpion, and Laser Induced Plasma Effects (LIPE) are at the forefront in technology in vehicle stopping capabilities. Think about what you see when you enter a military installation. Think about the security measures that are in place. Now think about what might happen if those measures fail or worse, lethal weapons have to be used to stop an adversary. Passenger and commercial vehicles are used by terrorists and combatants to attack facilities, convoys, and personnel. The Radio Frequency Vehicle Stopper improves upon available vehicle-stopping capabilities (e.g., caltrops, spike strips, and nets) by reducing the cost-per-use while providing reusability, multiple target engagement capability, and a target "hold-down" capability that halts small, mid-sized, and larger vehicles safely and effectively.

Those of us who fought in Somalia in 1993 were the first Americans to experience firsthand the barbaric tactic of using civilians as human shields in combat. We came away shaken, but we also realized that the tactic worked.
