Arlene Bettigole became interested in colonial history while living in the Hazen Homestead in Hartford built in 1781. She attended Shaker Museum workshops to learn about herbalism and growing, harvesting, and making culinary and herbal medicinal concoctions. During the revolutionary period (1775-1783), the colonists harvested herbs from their gardens, and foraged plants for their sustenance amid challenging times. Arlene will describe the use of herbs for culinary and medicinal purposes passed down through generations from these resilient men and women who called themselves Patriots.
