The QueensWay NYC

The QueensWay NYC Currently, this property, overseen by the City, is used only for illegal dumping of refuse.

Friends of The QueensWay is a group of New York City residents who propose to establish a greenway, consisting of a bicycle and pedestrian path, on the abandoned Long Island Railroad Rockaway Beach Branch right-of-way. The purpose of this organization is to convince the City of New York to establish a greenway - The QueensWay - on the abandoned railroad right-of-way that extends from Rego Park to

Ozone Park in central Queens. This linear park would link several communities with Forest Park and the recreational spaces of Jamaica Bay, including the Shore Parkway path, Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge and Gateway National Recreation Area. Establishment of The QueensWay would transform an unsightly and in many places hazardous property into safe, attractive and usable public parkland.

Today is and we take you back to a couple months ago when Ruben from Friends of the QueensWay took a visit to the beautiful Vanderbilt Motor Parkway in Queens (between Cunningham & Alley Pond parks and part of the NYC Greenway program). Here are a few of his pictures

It was such a gorgeous day to plant daffodil bulbs as part of NY4P's Daffodil Project -- we met at the Forest Hills Little League ballfields for our 2nd Daffodil Project this Fall. A wonderful group of volunteers helped us clean up the beds and plant bulbs that will bloom in spring 2015. Thank You all for your help. Thank you Tom & Larry for your on site expertise.

Stay tuned for more photos on our website. We have another Daffodil project coming up :)

Mr. Durst has moved on; he is now focusing his attention on the Queensway project, a 3.5-mile sort of outerborough High Line that the Trust for Public Land plans to construct along an abandoned railway stretching between Rego Park and Ozone Park. The elevated pedestrian and bicycle pathway would add recreational space, commute options and well, trees, to a swath of Queens.

“It requires a lot of funding but we believe Mayor de Blasio is going to be a big supporter, so we believe we’ll be able to get it started during his administration,” Mr. Durst said, neglecting to mention that he holds some sway; he has been a big financial supporter of the mayor.

Call Douglas Durst the anti-real estate developer. Though he spends his days planning to erect New York City’s tallest buildings, such as 1 World Trade Center, Mr. Durst also devotes his free time ...

Encourage your city to build more green spaces – parks, food forests, nature preserves. Get involved with your native plant society and city planners to transform unused areas for the health and well-being of residents, visitors and the environment.

An unused railroad is being converted to a public park in New York City. This is a part of a strategy to create urban greenspace designed for people, not cars.

3.5-mile stretch of an abandoned railway in Queens to be NYC's newest marquee park and a boon for local businesses and residents alike.

The QueensWay would turn an abandoned stretch of Long Island Railroad track into the borough's newest park.

The only thing holding up the project: that little matter of the price tag.

Walking in a city is the greatest unpriced pleasure there is.

Walking in a city is the greatest unpriced pleasure there is.

Walking may be the best way to go more slowly. But in even the most purposeless journey, we can't escape ourselves.
