Public Service Announcement:
This morning at approximately 0603 Deputies with the Sheriff's Department were dispatched to Moorman Park near N. 39th Street and Columbus Road for an injured fawn. Upon arrival Deputies located the fawn laying in the roadway with a broken leg and a few other minor injuries. Due to the fawn's age, it was determined the Animal Warden would be notified to pick up the fawn to seek medical attention. The fawn was removed from the roadway and placed in a quiet location until the Animal Warden could respond to the scene. A short time later, the fawn was picked up by the Animal Warden and transported to a local veterinarian. Unfortunately the fawn had to be euthanized due its injuries.
As Deputies were on scene, information was gathered that the fawn was intentionally struck by a vehicle the night before. Deputies were able to locate and speak to a witness. According to the witness, on 5/28/26 at approximately 10-10:30 P.M. a white sedan driven by a juvenile was leaving Moorman park traveling southbound on S. 39th Street towards Columbus Road. The suspect vehicle intentionally hit the fawn as it was following its mother and attempting to cross the road. The suspect vehicle then fled the scene.
If anyone has information on this incident, please contact the Adams County Sheriff's Department.
The public is reminded that intentionally harming wildlife in Illinois is a violation of state law and can result in fines, criminal charges, and loss of hunting/fishing rights. Parents, please have a conversation with your children on this matter.
