Honor. Courage. Commitment. Sailors from Navy Reserve Center Quincy had the honor of participating July 11 in an annual wreath-laying ceremony for President John Quincy Adams, the country’s sixth president, born on this day in 1767 in nearby Braintree. The current U.S. president sends wreaths twice a year to United First Parish Church in Quincy – one for John Quincy Adams and the other for his father, John Adams, the nation’s second president. Both Adams presidents supported a strong Navy. For John Quincy Adams, the American naval officer was a “warrior patriot,” a term he coined while advocating the nation found the United States Naval Academy.

First, they learned how to plot points on a topographical map, how to use a lensatic compass, and determine azimuths. The following day, they put their skills to practical use during a hike across the Blue Hills Reservation in Milton, Massachusetts.
