Human services sector struggling amid wage competition

The disability workforce CRISIS is deepening each day, due in large part to pay rates that can't compete with jobs in other sectors.

Challenges associated with paying competitive wages and retaining staff members have made it difficult to fill complex jobs in the Massachusetts human services sector.

If you and your family members use prescription medication and medical supplies, allow plenty of time for refills and new orders. Currently, many pharmacies and medical suppliers are overwhelmed with inadequate staffing, supply chain issues and other factors that can delay timely delivery of the health care supplies and medication that you need.

In win for residents with disabilities, Boston must upgrade curb ramps across the city

ICYMI! A *huge* #accessibility win in Boston by disabled leaders including Colleen Flanagan, Michael Muehe & our friends at Disability Law Center Inc. DLC-MA found less than half of Boston's 23,000 curb ramps complied with the ADA. Now, as part of the settlement, Boston has agreed to fix *all* curb ramps (with plans to finish by 2030). The city plans to install or upgrade an average of 1,630 curb ramps per year. Amazing accomplishment reflecting years of dedicated advocacy!

A long-running civil rights movement has won a huge but quiet victory in Boston. It’ll mean millions of dollars in spending, and construction projects across the city.

We were honored today to testify alongside amazing self-advocates, supporters, and advocates on supported decision-making bills in Mass. - S. 124/H.272! Jonathan Gardener spoke about his experience fighting cancer while using SDM: "Fighting Cancer has been one of the hardest journeys of my life. I am so thankful I was given the freedom to choose how I go about my treatments. Supported decision-making makes me feel involved with my life and choosing how and when I will be getting my Cancer treatments. I can let my body and voice guide me with the support from my Mom and Dad. "I don’t have many choices when it comes to having Cancer but at least I can control when and how we do it with SDM. Guardianship would be worse than death because I would lose my choice." Nancy Slotnick Gardner

Thank you to Senator Joan B. Lovely and State Representative Paul Tucker for your testimony today and your incredible leadership on S. 124/H. 272!

Did you know that 3G (3rd Generation) cellular networks are shutting down as early as February 2022? This means that some old cell phones and tablets, medical alert devices, home security and other systems relying on outdated technology will not work. The attached consumer guide has more information about what you can do to ensure that the technology you rely on is compatible with 4G and 5G networks.

Britney Spears' Sealed Conservatorship 'Care Plan' Includes 'Guidelines' to Aid Her 'Decision-Making'

In the conversation about #FreeBritney, don't miss an important point: Britney is using supported decision-making, a guardianship alternative that the disability community has been fighting for and is a widely accepted practice. #supporteddecisionmaking
Just tonight, our team did a supported decision-making training for families in three languages. At the end, a parent with guardianship over her child said she was "astounded" at how little she was told before being pushed to pursue guardianship and she was told nothing about alternatives like supported decision-making. We have this conversation at *every* training we do. We can do better. We must do better.
We are hard at work to make sure #NotJustBritney can access supported decision-making! On Monday, @MA_DDC and a group of *powerful* advocates called the Massachusetts Advocates for Supported Decision-Making will testify on Senator Joan B. Lovely and State Representative Paul Tucker's proposed supported decision-making law in Mass. - S. 124/H. 272. It's time! #mapoli

RTAG is facilitating an emergency public forum about The RIDE (the MBTA’s paratransit service) on Tuesday, November 16th from 3:00pm-4:30pm. Representatives from the MBTA will be present and there will be an opportunity for you to share your experiences with them. Register here: tinyurl.com/rtag1116

We are facilitating this meeting because The RIDE recently transitioned back to its original scheduling software after a year of using a different system led to chronically unreliable service. We have been working closely with MBTA leadership throughout this transition, but we know there is still more work to do.

We look forward to having you there for this critical meeting. Your voice matters.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to RTAG’s Community Organizer/Facilitator, Eri Solomon, at [email protected] or 617-870-9874.

Holly Simione, Massachusetts Developmental Disabilities Council Chair, gave powerful testimony on S. 745/H. 1256 about the death of her daughter, Elizabeth: "Her symptoms during her final hospital admissions during the pandemic were treatable, but she didn’t get the treatment."

"I watched in horror as staffed stop using PPE in my daughter’s room (but continued to use it elsewhere) and stopped checking labs and other essential testing. Eventually she was sent home to reserve ICU beds for COVID cases."
- Holly Simione, Massachusetts Developmental Disabilities Council Chair on S. 745/H. 1256 before Joint Committee on Health Care Financing

Thank you to Sonia Chang-Díaz Rep. Josh Cutler for championing S. 745/H. 1256, essential bills that would prevent discrimination in health care settings like Elizabeth experienced. Much gratitude to our partners Disability Policy Consortium for their incredible work.
