On this day, 14 years ago, the Quincy Police Department suffered a tremendous loss with the passing of active-duty Detective Ed Ryan.
For 16 years, Detective Ryan was a valued member of the department and served in many assignments during his tenure. One of his favorite roles was with the Mounted Unit.

During the planning of the new public safety headquarters, Chief Kennedy worked with the project manager to prominently display this mural of Detective Ryan in the lobby — a fitting tribute to his dedication and love for the job.

Remembering our fallen members has been and will continue to be a tradition we prioritize. Detective Ryan is missed and thought of often by all those who knew him.

The QPD has expanded and adjusted our mental health initiative. Over a decade ago our department hired a part-time clinician as a jail diversion clinician.

Our agency now has two full-time civilian clinicians who are assigned to our Community Service Unit. These clinicians are available to respond to assist those in crisis in real time. They also make recommendations to officers that respond to mental health calls.

In addition, they do follow ups to check in on people to make sure they don’t need further assistance or resources. QPD’s mental health clinicians responded to 1, 256 incidents in 2025, which is a 14% increase from 2024.

Our QPD mental health clinicians and the officers that work with them have become an asset as we strive to assist members of the community that are in crisis.

Yesterday we observed Police Officer Memorial Sunday. Observed each year on the first Sunday in June, it is a solemn day set aside to honor the men and women of law enforcement who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

This day serves as a powerful reminder of the courage, dedication, and selflessness required to wear the badge. It honors those who answered the call to protect and serve — and paid with their lives — while also supporting the families, friends, and colleagues they left behind. The Quincy Police Department observed the day marching from the Quincy District Courthouse to the Mount Wollaston Cemetery, where a wreath was placed by the parents of late Officer Paul Murphy at the QPMAA monument.

Thank you to all of the family and friends of our department members, retired officer’s, elected officials and community members who came to observe the day with us. We are grateful to work in such a supportive community!

The Quincy District Court held Law Day this past week. This annual tradition has been held for the past 50 years & one of the awards presented is the prestigious Dana Award.

40 years ago, 29-year-old Metropolitan Police Department Officer Robert Dana was fatally shot by a suspect on Blue Hills Parkway in Milton during a routine traffic stop. To honor his memory, the Robert Dana Award was created & is awarded annually to police officers for their distinguished service.

“Honorable First Justice Mark Coven: It is with great pride & sincere appreciation that I recommend Quincy Police Officers James Dalton, Andrew Minton, William Murphy, Patrick Watkins & Nicholas Rolfson for the prestigious Dana Award for their exceptional professionalism, courage, & composure during their response to a horrific domestic homicide in December 2025.

Upon arrival, the officers were immediately confronted with an extraordinarily chaotic, & deeply disturbing crime scene involving a deceased female victim & a critically injured male. Despite the overwhelming nature of the incident & the emotional toll such a scene can impose on first responders, these officers placed their emotions aside & responded with unwavering professionalism.

The officers rapidly secured the scene, searched for additional victims or threats, coordinated with responding personnel & rendered lifesaving aid to the surviving individual until EMS personnel assumed care. Throughout the incident, each officer demonstrated calm decision-making, teamwork & a steadfast commitment to their duty under some of the most difficult circumstances law enforcement officers may encounter.

What stands out most is that even in the face of anger, grief & shock, these officers upheld their oath & the rule of law. They rendered aid to a critically injured suspect because that is what the Constitution, the law & the profession demand of us.

The Officers represented the very best of professional policing: courage under pressure, respect for human life & unwavering commitment to their oath regardless of the circumstances before them.”

The Quincy Police Department is aware of a power outage affecting several neighborhoods in the city, National Grid has been notified and is responding. The outage is affecting traffic lights in several intersection.

As a reminder:

🚦If a traffic light is not functioning, treat as a stop, proceeding only when safe to do so.
🚦Flashing yellow, drivers should proceed with caution as traffic permits.
🚦Flashing red: treat lights as a stop sign.

Drive slowly and with caution when approaching any of these intersections.

The Quincy Police Department extends its deepest sympathies to the Braintree Fire Department on the loss of Fire Lieutenant Paul Smyth.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and all who knew and loved him.

A wake will be held for Lt. Smyth at Sweeney Brothers Funeral Home, 1 Independence Avenue Quincy on Tuesday, May 26, 2026 from 3:00pm-7:00pm, Relatives and Friends are invited to attend. A funeral mass will be celebrated at Saint John the Baptist Church, 44 School Street, Quincy on Wednesday, May 27 at 10:00am.
