HOPES Center is delived to announce that it has received an award from the Green Bay Packers Foundation as part of its 2026 Grant Cycle. This funding will support HOPES' street outreach efforts in service of people experiencine unsheltered homelessness in Racine County. Recognizing the worth and dignity of each person, HOPES helps people end their homelessness, and greatly appreciates the Green Bay Packers Foundation's support of this mission.

TONIGHT IS THE NIGHT
Have you ever thought about volunteering to serve people experiencing homelessness where they are on the streets? Do you think you could handle a few hours per week serving on the streets at night during the fall and winter months? If so, then becoming a fall / winter street outreach volunteer might be something for you. HOPES has some openings on its Street Outreach Teams during the coming cold weather season. Street Outreach Volunteers serve one night per week from 9 p.m. to midnight. They are part of a team of 2 - 3 people that goes out and meets people who are experiencing unsheltered homelessness (living "on the streets:) where they are.

HOPES has a few openings for Street Outreach Volunteers on its Tuesday Night and Thursday Night teams for the Fall / Winter Season (October - May).

Making an Initial Contact

This video shows what it is like to make an initial contact during street outreach at night. An initial contact is when we meet someone for the first time. You will see Bob and Scott (Friday night team) see what they think might be someone, commit to trying to meet the person, decide on the direction of approach, choose the lead (who will do the talking), get their supplies, and start off. They do a “call out” (letting the person know they are coming), initiate contact (say hello and introduce themselves), offer some assistance and information, ask permission to visit the person again, and then head off. It is a short encounter. They are like that at the first meeting, but other times initial contacts can be much longer.

Bob and Scott have been street outreach volunteers for a while, and were on a team with “The Other Scott” as team leader. Now they are experienced and co-lead their own team.

HOPES is holding a Street Outreach Information Session on Thursday, September 10, 2026 for people who might be interested in becoming street outreach volunteers. It is an opportunity to learn more and see if being a Street Outreach Volunteer might be a good fit.

HOPES has several positions for Street Outreach Volunteers for the fall / winter season. Volunteers will serve one night per week from about 9 p.m. to midnight, and will be on a team with an experienced team leader. The fall / winter volunteers will serve from October 2026 through May 2027, but could “re-enlist” for the spring / summer season 2027 if they’d like.
