Twenty-five years ago today, the sky was clear. Then everything changed.

Today, I’m joining the National September 11 Memorial & Museum’s Remember the Sky campaign by sharing a view of the sky over Racine.

As we remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, we also remember the courage of our first responders and the unity, resilience, and spirit of service that followed.

I hope you’ll take a moment today to look at the sky, remember those we lost, and reflect on what September 11 continues to mean to us.

I am deeply saddened by the passing of Bishop Lawrence L. Kirby, a dear friend and trusted advisor whose faith and leadership have left an indelible mark on Racine.

For decades, Bishop Kirby was a spiritual leader to thousands. At times when our community looked to its clergy for inspiration and guidance through difficult moments, he was there, offering prayer, pastoral care, and a steady voice of leadership.

His influence extended far beyond the church. He strengthened families, mentored young people, and worked to create a stronger, more connected community. Last year, we had the privilege of naming a street in his honor, recognizing the extraordinary impact he had on Racine during his lifetime.

On behalf of the City of Racine, I extend my deepest condolences to Dr. Renee Sartin-Kirby, their family, and the entire St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church family.

Racine is stronger because Bishop Kirby was here, and his legacy will live on in the countless people whose lives he touched.

Mayor Cory Mason reminds residents that peaceful protest and civil disobedience are part of a long American tradition, from Rosa Parks to today. As demonstrations unfold in cities across the country, he emphasizes the responsibility that comes with that legacy: stay nonviolent, stay focused on the issue at hand, and act safely and patriotically as we continue the work of building a more perfect union.

Yesterday, a comment was posted in response to the City’s Transit Equity Day message that reflected racist and hateful views.

While the City cannot remove comments simply because they are offensive, I want to be clear that this type of language and behavior is unequivocally condemned.

Transit Equity Day commemorates the courage of Rosa Parks, whose refusal to accept segregation helped change this country. Her legacy reminds us why equity in public transportation, and in public life, matters.

That legacy should be honored, not undermined.

I am incredibly inspired by the generosity of the Walden III students and their families, who raised nearly $10,000 and donated more than 700 boxes of nonperishable food items to the Racine County Food Bank in this year's food drive. Thank you for showing what our community can accomplish together.

Wishing everyone a very happy Thanksgiving!
