We could not be happier to recognize the amazing Field of Honor Project at the Glencoe Mansion, Museum & Gallery! Much thanks to Tom Alston and Frank Herzog for their brilliant leadership on this initiative - over 115 flags were displayed in honor of veterans, first responders, teachers, and more. Every one of these heroes deserves a big thank you for their service! 🤝

Save the dates! District Conference will be held March 3-5, 2023 at the Salem Civic Center, Salem, VA. The District Conference will be “convention-like” with an emphasis on Service. A problem with renovations at The Homestead became an opportunity to re-style the conference format. After researching options inside and outside the District a suggestion to look at the Salem Civic Center was presented. While attendees will stay off site, the Civic Center gives us the space to offer more service opportunities for members. It will also lower the cost of registration and lodging as opposed to previous conferences. And, if you have an RV, full hook up spaces are available to rent! Reservations details can be found on our website & we'll be posting more soon!

One of the many benefits of being a member of Rotary is having the opportunity to meet and network with other professionals. This month, Radford Noon Rotary Club received a presentation from Bill McCann, Founder of Vittles for Vets. Through Vittles for Vets, qualifying veterans receive a $50 food gift card on a weekly basis. The annual cost of lending a 'hand up' is $2,600 per enrolled veteran, and Vittles for Vets relies solely on the generosity of donations. To learn more, visit www.vittlesforvetsradfordva.com. Many thanks to Bill for the important information he shared about this valuable 501C-3 charity corporation.

Did you know that in 1994 The International Commission for the Certification of Poliomyelitis Eradication announced that polio had been eliminated from the Americas. In 1995, Health workers and volunteers immunize 165 million children in China and India in 1 week. Rotary launches the PolioPlus Partners program, enabling Rotary members in polio-free countries to provide support to fellow members in polio-affected countries for polio eradication activities.

Musa Muhammed Ali, a farmer in Borno state, Nigeria, has had to deal with the many ways polio has affected his life. For instance, he used to have to pay for transportation when he needed to buy feed for his animals. But after receiving a hand-operated tricycle funded through Rotary’s PolioPlus gr...

In our continuation of diving into the history of polio today we go back to 1988. Which is when the Rotary International and the World Health Organization launched the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. There were an estimated 350,000 cases of polio in 125 countries. The World Health Assembly adopted the resolution for the worldwide eradication of polio, and along with Rotary International, launched the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI)!

The goal of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative is to complete the eradication and containment of all wild, vaccine-related and Sabin polioviruses, such that no child ever again suffers paralytic poliomyelitis.

Today's dive into the history of Polio starts in 1921 when Franklin Delano Roosevelt (1882-1945), former New York State Senator, Assistant Secretary to the Navy, and future U.S. president, fell ill with what most historians think was polio. Roosevelt’s illness left his legs paralyzed for life. He avoided being photographed in his wheelchair, however, and used braces and canes to appear to walk. By 1929, Philip Drinker and Harvard University’s Louis Agassiz Shaw Jr. invent an artificial respirator for patients suffering from paralytic polio — the iron lung.

From the first, Roosevelt seemed to understand that rehabilitation of the polio patient was a social problem with medical aspects. It was not a medical problem with social aspects.Hugh G. Gallagher, 1998When Franklin Roosevelt contracted polio in 1921, at age thirty-nine, it inspired his interest in...

In 1894, the first major documented Polio outbreak in the United States occurs in Vermont; 18 deaths and 132 cases of permanent paralysis are reported. By 1916, a major Polio outbreak in New York City kills more than 2,000 people. Across the United States, Polio takes the lives of around 6,000 people, and paralyzes thousands more.

Endemic transmission of wild poliovirus is continuing in areas of Afghanistan and Pakistan. Failure to stop polio in these last remaining areas could result in global resurgence of the disease. That is why it is critical to ensure polio is eradicated completely, once and for all!

Spearheaded by national governments, WHO, Rotary International, the CDC and UNICEF, and later joined by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, the incidence of polio worldwide has been reduced by 99%, and the world stands on the threshold of eradicating a human disease globally for only the second time in history.

As long as a single child remains infected, children in all countries are at risk of contracting polio. Failure to eradicate polio from these last remaining strongholds could result in a global resurgence of the disease.

Rotary members worldwide have contributed more than $2.1 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect nearly 3 billion children in 122 countries from this paralyzing disease. Rotary’s advocacy efforts have played a role in decisions by governments to contribute more than $10 billion to the effort.

In June 2022, polio was confirmed in an unvaccinated young adult resident of New York. In Sep 2022, NY Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency to boost polio vaccination rates amid evidence that the virus is spreading in communities. The polio vaccination rate is alarmingly low in some New York counties: 60% in Rockland, 58% in Orange, 62% in Sullivan and 79% in Nassau, according to their health department. The NY statewide average for polio immunization is about 79%.

Poliomyelitis: an infectious viral disease that affects the central nervous system and can cause temporary or permanent paralysis. It mainly affects children under 5 years of age, and in the early days, it was called “Infantile Paralysis”. However, any unvaccinated person of any age can contract the disease, and it came to be called “polio”.

The Noon Rotary Club of Radford knows how to have fun! At each meeting we say the "Four Way Test" together, and this test is our ethical guide for Rotarians. Of the things we think, say or do, we consider if it is the truth, if it is fair, if it builds goodwill and friendships and is beneficial to all. Then we ask ourselves a very important guiding question: Will it be FUN? Cowboy day at Rotary was indeed fun! Thanks to Long Way Brewing for hosting us weekly!
