Summer can bring a lot of good things β€” longer days, family time, community events, and a break from the usual routine. β˜€οΈ

But for many families, summer can also mean higher grocery bills, changes in meal schedules, and stretching household budgets a little further.

If you or someone you know is looking for food resources, support may be available through New River Community Action and our community partners.

πŸ’™ No one should have to choose between paying a bill and putting food on the table.

To learn more about available resources, contact New River Community Action or visit our website: https://newrivercommunityaction.org/

Sometimes the most helpful thing we can do is connect someone to the right resource. If this information might help someone you know, please consider sharing it.

This is what Community Action looks like every day πŸ’™

Sometimes it's helping someone prepare their taxes.

Sometimes it's connecting a person in recovery with resources and support.

Sometimes it's sitting down with someone, listening to their story, and helping them take the next step forward.

At New River Community Action, every program is different. But at the heart of all of them is the same goal: helping people access the resources, opportunities, and support they need to thrive.

Because community action isn't just about programs.

It's about people.

We need some local recommendations β˜€οΈ

If someone was spending their very first summer in the New River Valley, what's the ONE thing they absolutely have to do?

πŸ›Ά River days
πŸ₯Ύ Hiking trails
πŸͺ• Friday night Jamboree
🌽 Weekend farmers markets
πŸŽ‰ Local festivals
🫣 Hidden gems?...

We know everybody has that one thing that makes it feel like summer in the NRV - what's yours?

Community doesn't happen by accident πŸ’™

Behind every event, program, donation drive, and community initiative are people who choose to show up.

Volunteers help make so much of our work possible. Matthew Smith, 2025's NRCA Volunteer of the Year is a wizard with a power tool and a floor plan. Anytime we need something built, Matt is there. And that's a big undertaking considering we built 2 haunted houses (with a little help from our friends).

As we head into summer, we're especially grateful for the volunteers who help strengthen our communities in so many different ways.

Have you volunteered with New River Community Action before? We'd love to hear about your experience in the comments!

Here's to summer in the New River Valley! β˜€οΈ

Long days, time spent with family and friends, and making memories that last long after the season ends.

As we head into summer, we're looking forward to another season of serving our communities, supporting families, building partnerships, and creating opportunities for people across our region.

Whether you're spending your summer at local events, exploring the outdoors, volunteering, or simply enjoying time with the people you love, we hope it's a season filled with connection, joy, and community.

What's your favorite part of summer in the NRV? πŸ’™

The NRCA Radford Emergency Assistance and Nutrition Program assists low-income families and individuals with basic needs, including food, housing, and utilities. The goal of the program is to stabilize low-income individuals (below 200% of the federal poverty level), averting catastrophes such as loss of housing, utility shutoffs, and lack of food. The program operates a food pantry and emergency assistance office at NRCA's hub in Radford.

With this grant, we hope to serve 600 residents to prevent loss of housing, food insecurity, and other financial hardship. We are unable to assist everyone who needs support due to growing needs, rising costs, and funding challenges.

As Community Action Month comes to a close, we're reflecting on the many ways community shows up every day across our region πŸ’™

This month, we've shared stories from programs that support children, families, individuals, and communities throughout the New River Valley.

From Head Start classrooms to Emergency Assistance services, from Virginia CARES success stories to community events that bring neighbors together, every program looks a little different.

But they're all connected by the same mission: to promote and support the well-being and self-reliance of individuals, families, and communities in the New River Valley.

New River Community Action is proud to be part of the Community Action Network, a national movement working to strengthen communities across the country. But our favorite part of that work will always be local β€” the families, volunteers, staff, partners, and neighbors who make this community what it is.

Thank you for celebrating Community Action Month with us.

Together, we thrive πŸ’™

Sometimes everyone needs a little extra support to get through a rough patch.

Emergency Assistance, a program of New River Community Action helps individuals and families facing unexpected challenges connect with resources that can provide stability during a crisis.

Whether it's assistance with utilities, food access, referrals, or other basic needs, the goal is simple: helping people navigate tough seasons with dignity and support.

Community Action is about more than responding to crises β€” it's about helping people move forward.
