Starting over takes more than determination.

For people rebuilding their lives after incarceration, several parts of life may need attention at once. A job may be the goal, but transportation, identification, housing, and access to basic needs can determine whether that goal is within reach.

NRCA’s Virginia CARES program helps people navigate those barriers while building a path toward employment and greater stability. Support is tailored to each person and may include job-readiness guidance, employment leads, transportation assistance, referrals, and other practical resources.

Because a second chance should come with a real opportunity to move forward.

Children learn best when they feel safe enough to be curious.

That’s what Head Start helps create: welcoming classrooms where children ages 3–5 can explore, build early reading and math skills, learn alongside one another, and grow in confidence.

And the support doesn’t stop at the classroom door. Meals, health and developmental screenings, and resources for parents and caregivers are all part of NRCA Head Start’s whole-child, whole-family approach.

The supplies donated through Volunteer Montgomery's recent Supply Drive will show up in classrooms in practical, everyday ways—as materials children can use to create, discover, and show us what they can do.

So yes, we’re saying thank you one more time. To Volunteer Montgomery and everyone who donated: your support is helping create successful beginnings for more than 200 children across the New River Valley.

Sometimes building community looks a whole lot like playing together.

A child trying something new. A caregiver getting to enjoy the moment, too. Neighbors laughing together who may not have known one another when the day began.

This little look back at last year’s Family Fun Day captures something we never want to lose: community spaces where families can show up as they are, spend time together, and feel like they belong.

NRCA’s work happens through programs and services—but it also happens in moments like these, when connection feels simple and everyone has a place in the fun.

What makes a community event feel truly welcoming to your family?

Hardship doesn’t always begin with a major crisis.

Sometimes, it begins with a car repair that swallowed the grocery budget. Fewer work hours than expected. A utility bill that came in higher than usual. Rent due just before the next paycheck.

When there’s no room in the budget to absorb it, one unexpected setback can become an emergency quickly. But the right support, at the right time, can help someone catch their breath and protect the stability they’ve worked hard to build.

That’s why NRCA offers emergency assistance, food support, housing programs, and other services across the New River Valley.

Sometimes, having the right support is what makes the next step possible.
